@hazelweakly I used to feel similarly about the shapes of the keys, but then I realized I could bind the extra key to Ää (used _all the time_ in Finnish), and they became worth it. The locations of the non-word characters are something I can't get over, though. I ended up getting a UK keyboard on my latest laptop (ISO key shapes, but almost everything is in the same place as on the American layout) so that I wouldn't have to look at the wrong characters everywhere while my actual keyboard layout was set to a lightly modified US layout.

@hazelweakly and the key to the left of "1". Who's that for? I've never used those symbols (tbf I'm not sure they're even on a UK layout keyboard)

@hazelweakly Part of this is definitely Apple's fault — i have never once needed ± or § to have a dedicated key. Non-Apple ISO keyboards (or at least UK ones) have \ and | beside left-shift, # and ~ beside the enter key, and backtick to the left of 1. (Admittedly shift-backtick gives you ¬, which I have also never needed except for making a little face ¬_¬)

@hazelweakly I lowkey would love tilde to be somewhere that isn't the worst place on the keyboard. But I think I use it more often than most people.

@hazelweakly I'm used to both layouts, settling on ANSI because it's easier to source. But all my ThinkPads are European so they have ISO variants. My latest one has a German keyboard so the top alphabetic line starts "QWERTZ." I don't really care about the key cap legends, as I use whatever is available to remap everything to my preferences, and I touch type anyway. Some of my keyboards even have completely blank keycaps because I like to play with the firmware. @hazelweakly

@hazelweakly funnily enough i usually use a Canadian Multilingual ISO one. Because all the accents in french are a pita in the US layout

@hazelweakly all of this screams pain ;) I know I'm weird but staggered layouts should be illegal. And why use your weakest fingers for stuff like shift, return, backspace, Ctrl that you need all the time.. As I said, I'm probably weird ^^ But learning other layouts takes time and energy but in the end it's worth it. I agree that []{}/|\ and so on are mostly correct on the ANSI layout. I have to use ISO DE sometimes, which also butchers those.
