Project leading is one of wildly different things about other countries.
In Finland I've learnt to have pretty extreme freedom at least in the IT. I tell how long what I'm going to do takes and inform the higher ups when I'm done and if there's something noteworthy about it. Other than that I'm free to work as I want.
For about a month I've been working with a foreign customer and it's been a culture shock.
Basically I get 2-3 phone calls a day, where I'm asked what I'm doing, what I did before and I'm expected to report current progress. It's really weird to me having to tell that I'm working on a long project where single parts of it take days, so if I'm called 3 hours later, I'm still doing the same thing.
The problem resolving is also different. As a highly independent worker, I try to figure out a a solution to problems I encounter before asking for help. I prefer solutions that are better in the long run. But this multiple contacts a day management also comes with a strong preference to deal with every problem with the quickest possible solution, often ending with "pee in your pants during winter" solutions.
A weird world to work in. #work #worklife
