Update. Here's a #DOGE bro testifying in the lawsuit about terminating #DEI-related #NEH grants. He's being asked: What is DEI? If that's too complicated, what is your understanding of DEI? https://bsky.app/profile/404media.co/post/3mgpkttntsk2t #Censorship #DefendResearch #Funding #Trump #TrumpVResearch #USPol #USPolitics

"How #DOGE Gutted the #NEH in 22 Days." https://www.insidehighered.com/news/faculty-issues/research/2026/03/11/how-doge-gutted-neh-22-days "[A newly released] trove of documents—including depositions with top NEH administrators and DOGE staff, as well as emails, spreadsheets and text messages—suggest rushed, chaotic funding termination decisions and reveal the extent of DOGE’s influence in terminating 97 percent of the agency’s grants." Example: DOGE terminated an NEH grant to replace the HVAC system at a museum, acting on this #ChatGPT rationale: "Improving HVAC systems enhances preservation conditions for collections, aligning with the goal of providing greater access to diverse audiences." #Censorship #DefendResearch #Funding #Humanities #Takedowns #Trump #TrumpVResearch #USPol #USPolitics

The flagship journal of the American Diabetes Association (#ADA) just published an editorial criticizing the #Trump admin for attempting to "Dismantle and Destroy Biomedical Research in the United States." https://diabetesjournals.org/care/article/49/6/901/164764/Misguided-Brushes-of-a-Pen-Continue-to-Dismantle At an ADA conference yesterday, some members tried to pass out copies of the editorial just before #NIH Director #JayBhattacharya was scheduled to speak. They were blocked by security and escorted out of the building by police. The ADA had called in the police. Bhattacharya cancelled his talk. https://www.nytimes.com/2026/06/05/well/ada-conference-diabetes-trump.html PS: What's going on at the ADA? The editorial had a disclaimer saying that it only represented the views of the authors, not the association. But the association had the courage to publish it. Then the association blocked its distribution, at its own conference, even calling in the police. Does it support free speech, even in support of science? Or not? And why can police stop peaceful scientists from handing out an editorial, even at an event sponsored by the group publishing the editorial? #Censorship #DefendResearch #Medicine #TrumpVResearch #USPol #USPolitics

Update. After the American Diabetes Association (#ADA) physically evicted five members from an ADA event for peacefully handing out print copies of a pro-science, anti-Trump editorial published in the ADA's own flagship journal … https://www.medpagetoday.com/special-reports/exclusives/121657

  • two senior leaders resigned in protest -- the new President-Elect and the chair of the Scientific Sessions Planning Committee;
  • at least two others might have resigned, but these reports are still unconfirmed;
  • dozens of members walked out of the presidential address, holding signs that said "We stand with science"; and
  • colleagues launched a "shame on you" open letter against the ADA. https://www.change.org/p/an-open-letter-to-the-american-diabetes-association-shame-on-you

(I just signed the open letter and hope you will too.)

Update. Here's the #ADA side of the controversy. It was just following the law requiring nonprofit orgs to be nonpartisan. https://diabetes.org/newsroom/press-releases/american-diabetes-associations-statement-regarding-nonpartisanship

PS: A few points in reply:

  • Then why did the ADA flagship journal publish the pro-science, Trump-critical editorial in the first place? Is the ADA now saying that was a mistake? Will it try to retract that editorial?
  • The members distributing copies of the editorial were not acting for the association. Or if that was not clear, what if they'd made clear (as the authors of the editorial made clear) that they were only speaking for themselves, not for the ADA?
  • Could the ADA preserve its nonpartisanship by disavowing the peaceful leafleteers? Did it think federal law required it to call the police to remove them from the building?
  • Would the ADA have called the police on peaceful pro-Trump or pro-Battacharya leafleteers?
  • Would it have called the police on attendees who sat quietly in their seats wearing "We stand with science" buttons?

"White House deletes thousands of web pages about energy conservation as heatwave slams US." https://www.theverge.com/policy/961449/white-house-mamdani-heatwave-deletion (#paywalled) "The deletions by the Trump administration are broad and indiscriminate. While pages that would support Mamdani’s request to lower thermostats were deleted, so too were pages about water conservation, types of insulation, and its solar decathlon challenge." Here are preservation copies of the deleted pages in the Internet Archive. https://web.archive.org/web/*/https://www.energy.gov/energysaver/* #Censorship #Climate #DefendResearch #Takedowns #Trump #TrumpVResearch #USPol #USPolitics

The US used to require that corporations disclose the true identities of their beneficial owners (reducing the corrupt influence of shell companies) and kept a database of the info. Now the Trump admin is refusing to enforce the rule and deleting the data. "Republicans Are Dismantling a Key Tool in the War Against Kleptocrats." https://newrepublic.com/article/211855/republicans-making-world-safe-kleptocrats PS: Because the database was never #OpenAccess -- basically, just for law enforcement officials -- it's probably beyond the reach of data rescue projects. #Data #DefendResearch #Takedowns #Trump #TrumpVResearch #USPol #USPolitics

Excellent statement by Yale epidemiologist @gregggonsalves@med-mastodon.com on why scientists should speak up about the defunding, censorship, deterioration, and ideological distortion of US science -- or at least take notes: https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/americas-compact-between-science-and-politics-is-broken/ Scientists now have the responsibility of "bearing witness and putting evidence on the table. It may not be persuasive to Russell Vought or Marco Rubio, but it is for the dossier, for the truth and reconciliation commission, for the Nuremberg trials that come after. Keep the receipts. Write down what you see. Tell them what they did. We’re very good at documenting how X leads to Y." #Censorship #DefendResearch #Funding #Trump #TrumpVResearch #USPol #USPolitics

"The Justice Department Erases History; Lawfare Restores It." https://www.lawfaremedia.org/article/the-justice-department-erases-history--lawfare-restores-it "Last week, the Justice Department deleted thousands of press releases related to the Jan. 6 insurrection and other matters. Here they are…We have restored the vast bulk of what was deleted. We have also started to preemptively archive a raft of material that has not yet been deleted but probably will be, given its thematic relationship to the material that was 86ed." #Censorship #DefendResearch #Preservation #Takedowns #Trump #TrumpVResearch #USPol #USPolitics
