ABC News: Top Stories | Supreme Court upholds broad reading of SEC authority to recoup gains in fraud cases AI generated summary, Read the full article for complete information. The U.S. Supreme Court unanimously upheld a broad interpretation of the Securities and Exchange Commission’s power to recover ill‑gotten profits from securities‑fraud perpetrators, ruling that the SEC does not need to prove that individual investors were financially harmed as long as the violator made a profit from illegal transactions. The decision stemmed from the case of Ongkaruck Sripetch, who was sentenced to 21 months in prison after pleading guilty to selling unregistered penny‑stock securities and was ordered to repay more than $3 million, including interest. Justice Neil Gorsuch wrote that anyone who profits from such wrongdoing can be considered a victim entitled to compensation, solidifying the SEC’s authority to pursue disgorgement in fraud cases. The Guardian | Trump’s corruption leaves us cynical – and complacent | Judith Levine by Judith Levine AI generated summary, Read the full article for complete information. The article argues that Donald Trump’s recent actions constitute an unprecedented level of presidential corruption and impunity, exemplified by his creation of a $1.776 billion “anti‑weaponization” slush fund that uses taxpayer money to repay friends and possibly Jan. 6 participants in exchange for legal protection, as well as his willingness to divert public funds for personal projects like a privately‑funded White House ballroom and a triumphal arch without congressional approval. The piece contends that this unchecked self‑dealing erodes the rule of law, fuels popular cynicism, and normalizes autocratic behavior, warning that such cynicism can lead to fatalistic compliance that ultimately empowers the autocrat. It calls for a rejection of complacent cynicism and a renewed, hard‑won pessimism that acknowledges the depth of the problem while seeking winnable battles against authoritarian drift. World & Nation | Cruise lines can be held liable for using docks seized under Castro, Supreme Court rules by David G. Savage AI generated summary, Read the full article for complete information. The U.S. Supreme Court on Thursday issued an 8‑1 ruling that revived a $400‑million judgment against four cruise‑line operators—Caribbean Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings, Carnival Corporation and MSC Cruises—for docking in Havana between 2016 and 2019 under a little‑used 1996 law that permits suits against parties that profit from property confiscated by the Cuban government; the Court noted that previous presidents had blocked enforcement of the law but President Trump had allowed the claims to proceed, and Justice Thomas wrote that the cruise lines, which paid the Cuban government tens of millions of dollars and earned hundreds of millions from the voyages, should be liable, while Justice Kagan dissented, arguing the dock‑property interest had expired in 2004; a lower‑court order requiring each line to pay $100 million was stayed by the appeals court, and a similar claim by Exxon Mobil remains pending. CounterPunch.org | The Trump Tax Man Goeth by Matthew Stevenson AI generated summary, Read the full article for complete information. The article explains that the Trump family’s $10 billion lawsuit against the IRS—stemming from a 2019 leak of Trump tax returns that showed he often reported huge losses and paid as little as $750 in income tax—appears to be a sham designed to extract money from the government. Because the Justice Department and Treasury, which oversee the lawsuit, are staffed by Trump appointees, the case could be “settled” internally, allowing Trump to claim a massive payout and immunity from audits while his allies in the administration approve the deal. Legal experts note the suit is likely frivolous and may be dismissed on procedural grounds, but the urgency to settle comes from the risk of a judge striking it down. Ultimately, the purported settlement would grant Trump a financial windfall, protect his businesses from further IRS scrutiny, and reinforce a precedent that a president can sue his own government and negotiate a private settlement. Times of India | ‘Mahabharat will look very small,’ remarks JB Pardiwala on Rani Kapur-Priya Sachdev Kapur battle over late Sunjay Kapur’s estate AI generated summary, Read the full article for complete information. Rani Kapur has approached the Supreme Court of India with a fresh petition in the ongoing inheritance dispute over the estate of her late son, Sunjay Kapur. In the application, she asks the court to bar Priya Sachdev Kapur and other respondents from meddling with the administration of the RK Family Trust while a court‑appointed mediation is underway, and seeks a stay on a board meeting scheduled for May 18 that she says could alter control of the family‑linked companies. The matter was heard before a bench led by Chief Justice JB Pardiwala, who remarked that the case “will look very small compared to a Mahabharat,” underscoring its complexity. Earlier, the Supreme Court had appointed former Chief Justice DY Chandrachud as the mediator to facilitate settlement talks between the parties. Boston.com | Prosecutors to retry Alex Murdaugh in deaths of wife and son after high court overturned convictions by Associated Press AI generated summary, Read the full article for complete information. South Carolina’s highest court threw out Alex Murdaugh’s murder convictions and life sentence after a trial clerk improperly urged jurors to distrust his testimony, prompting a ruling that the clerk “placed her fingers on the scales of justice.” While the overturning means Murdaugh—already serving a 40‑year federal term for stealing roughly $12 million from clients—will stay behind bars, prosecutors say they will retry him on the killings of his wife Maggie and son Paul under stricter evidentiary limits, barring extensive testimony about his financial crimes. Murdaugh continues to deny the murders, and his lawyers argue there is no physical evidence linking him to the shootings. The court’s decision underscores the need for an impartial jury and warns future judges to keep the focus on the homicide charges rather than his prior thefts. Alex Murdaugh’s murder convictions for the 2021 killings of his wife Maggie and son Paul were overturned by the South Carolina Supreme Court on Wednesday; the five‑member court unanimously struck down the verdict from Murdaugh’s six‑week 2023 trial, delivering a “stunning legal bombshell” that nullified the earlier convictions of the disgraced legal scion. 9News | Clerk trying to boost book sales blamed for wrecking Murdaugh trial by 9News AI generated summary, Read the full article for complete information. Prosecutors in South Carolina announced they will seek a new murder trial against disbarred attorney Alex Murdaugh for the 2021 killings of his wife Maggie and son Paul after the state Supreme Court vacated his convictions, ruling that the court clerk’s comments and the admission of unrelated financial‑crime evidence compromised the jury’s fairness. The justices found that clerk Becky Hill had improperly swayed jurors by questioning Murdaugh’s credibility and attempting to promote a book about the case, leading to her own guilty plea for lying to a judge. Although Murdaugh is already serving a 40‑year federal sentence for stealing roughly $12 million from clients and continues to deny the murders, the high court’s decision mandates a retrial to ensure a fair, impartial proceeding. ABC News: Top Stories | Alex Murdaugh murder convictions overturned by South Carolina Supreme Court AI generated summary, Read the full article for complete information. The South Carolina Supreme Court has overturned Alex Murdaugh’s 2023 murder convictions for the killings of his wife Margaret “Maggie” Murdaugh and son Paul, ordering a new trial after determining that former Colleton County Clerk of Court Mary Rebecca “Becky” Hill interfered with the jury by urging them to disregard Murdaugh’s testimony, pressuring a swift guilty verdict, and misrepresenting information to the court. While his murder convictions are vacated, Murdaugh remains incarcerated for multiple financial crimes, serving a 27‑year state sentence and a 40‑year federal sentence. The court’s decision cited Hill’s alleged perjury, obstruction of justice, and misconduct, highlighting that the integrity of the original trial was compromised. This development is ongoing, with further updates expected. The Supreme Court, after appointing former Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud as mediator in the estate dispute of late industrialist Sunjay Kapur, heard a fresh plea on May 13 filed by his mother Rani Kapur alleging that the Court’s May 7 order was being circumvented; the bench led by Justice J B Pardiwala scheduled a hearing for May 14 and will await a preliminary report from the mediator, while Rani seeks to declare the 2017 family trust—allegedly created with forged documents—null and void, maintain the status‑quo over its properties, and address related proceedings pending before the Delhi High Court. Times of India | Supreme Court to hear ED plea to cancel bail to West Bengal coal scam 'kingpin' AI generated summary, Read the full article for complete information. Supreme Court on Tuesday agreed to hear the Enforcement Directorate’s plea to cancel the anticipatory bail granted to Anup Majee, alleged kingpin in a West Bengal coal‑smuggling case in which roughly ₹2,700 crore of national resources were allegedly plundered. A bench of Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta issued notice to Majee but postponed an early hearing, listing the matter for September, allowing him to remain on bail until then. The ED argued that Majee had previously absconded and that his accountant remains missing, while Majee’s counsel said he had cooperated, appearing before the agency 23 times, including 13 times without protection from arrest. The probe could expose a money‑laundering trail involving purported payoffs of over ₹1,300 crore to senior Trinamool Congress officials, with a recovered diary allegedly recording payments to “Pankaj da” (₹10 crore installments) and “Bankura IC,” who allegedly delivered cash cartons on behalf of party leaders. ABC News: Top Stories | First wave of tariff refunds will hit some businesses tomorrow AI generated summary, Read the full article for complete information. The first wave of tariff refunds is set to start hitting American businesses’ bank accounts, with U.S. Customs and Border Protection reporting that over 330,000 importers paid $166 billion in tariffs under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act before the Supreme Court ruled the program illegal. By April 26, at least 75,000 firms had applied for refunds through a new online portal, though about 15 % of claims were rejected for errors or ineligible shipments. Large companies anticipate sizable payouts—Walmart reportedly is due $10 billion, Target $2 billion, Nike $1 billion and Macy’s $320 million—and say the money will be used to pay down debt, rehire staff, restock inventory, or possibly lower prices, rather than being passed directly to consumers. Shipping firms such as UPS, FedEx, and DHL will refund customers for packages affected by the tariffs, but shoppers should not expect personal rebates for higher prices paid last year, which the Tax Foundation estimates cost the average household roughly $700. After the Supreme Court's ruling last week on the Voting Rights Act, Tennessee Republicans have passed a map splitting up the state's lone majority-Black district. @Beachbum@mastodon.sdf.org @heidilifeldman@mastodon.social While it's not my business -- not my #SupremeCourt -- it seems to me that fixing the court must be a priority OVER everything else, because until the court is fixed it is likely to be practically impossible to fix anything else. And although I know you have no specific legislations that says that Supremes may not be corrupt, I feel sure that personal prosecutions can and should be brought against them for corruption under more general legislation.

Times of India | ED flags legal hurdles in money laundering probe AI generated summary, Read the full article for complete information. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) highlighted the legal obstacles hampering its money‑laundering investigations, noting a key controversy over whether a probe must wait for the conclusion of the related predicate‑offence trial or can proceed independently under international standards and Financial Action Task Force guidelines. While the Supreme Court has linked money‑laundering cases to the predicate offence, higher‑court rulings have treated them as standalone crimes, creating ambiguity that ED chief Rahul Navin says impedes its work despite a 94% conviction rate. He affirmed the agency’s resolve to pursue over 2,400 pending cases and seize proceeds of crime, with additional solicitor general S V Raju echoing that a predicate offence should not automatically halt investigations. The event also recognized ED officers involved in the Kolkata searches of political consultancy firm I‑PAC, which were disrupted by the state chief minister.
