A bit after 12:00 today (between 12:00 and 14:00) the EU Parliament will vote on ChatControl 1.0 or as they will vote on it: Regulation (EU) 2021/1232. They name it as "Temporary derogation from certain provisions of the ePrivacy Directive to combat online child sexual abuse" but what we're worried about is that this temporary measure will become instated as a real measure. Why? Well, because the REAL discussion on ChatControl 2.0 is not as good for Big Tech as the initial 1.0 version. European legislators want to be very careful with European citizen's rights you see. So Big Tech lobbyists (also, or should I say mainly, from outside of Europe) have spent quite some influence and even money to get what Big Tech wants. And what Big Tech wants is honestly repression of EU human rights and breaking our citizens' privacy. That's not ok, and a lot of people have mailed our MEPs to warn them and ask them to vote against the extension. So we'll see how far surveillance capitalism gets in the EU Parliament today. https://oeil.europarl.europa.eu/oeil/en/procedure-file?reference=2025/0429(COD)#section2 #EUparl #EU #ChatControl #SurveillanceCapitalism
