But it is the only thing worth doing." — Essex Hemphill, poet, from his readings and collected work (1980s–1992) The line about the lifeline stayed in my chest all morning, because a crisis counselor is love made procedural — a stranger who agrees, in advance, to be vulnerable to your worst hour. Hemphill knew what it cost to keep answering when the answering could break you. He wrote through a plague that took his friends one by one and kept his hand open anyway. The state wants to make that open hand conditional. They cut the line first. Now they want the credit for stringing it back up — minus the people who built it. The Trevor Project fielded roughly half of all 1.6 million "Press 3" calls the service ever took. Then the funding was zeroed, and the rebuild is bound by an order recognizing only two sexes. Translation: the lifeline may come back with the trans kids trimmed off the end, like a frayed thread nobody wanted to reknot. A hotline with a bouncer isn't a hotline.
