Elena Pero is dead: she was 60 years old.
Elena Pero, a sports journalist for Sky Sport and the voice of Italian tennis, has died. She commented on July 13th on Jannik Sinner’s success at Wimbledon, in the last match played by the Azzurri player before his injury. Sky Sport announced it on its website. Already with Sky Sport from the beginning, for more than thirty-five years, since it was called Telepiù, she had been part of it since its founding, as a practicing journalist in 1991, hired by Rino Tommasi, her mentor. Over the years, she established herself as the most authoritative voice of Italian tennis in live commentary and did so before the Sinner, Musetti, and Cobolli era, eventually covering the achievements of the number one player in the world, including the two times at Wimbledon, the last one just over two months ago.
“She never missed a live commentary, not even during her illness. The last time we heard her, like you from home, was at Wimbledon, where she celebrated Jannik Sinner’s second consecutive victory, as she had done for the historic first time – July 13th, 2025 – in partnership with Paolo Bertolucci, who, together with her, composed the second formidable doubles of his career in over 20 years of live commentaries together,” wrote Sky Sport director Federico Ferri in his farewell. In just a few minutes, under the Instagram post with which Sky Sport announced Elena Pero’s death, many comments from friends, colleagues and fans who had followed tennis for years through her live commentaries arrived.
