Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Greenville-Spartanburg SC 157 AM EDT Sun May 3 2026

WHAT HAS CHANGED

No changes to extent of Frost Advisory or Freeze Warning this morning.

Rainfall amounts for the middle of the week system continue to trend slightly higher.

KEY MESSAGES

  1. Widespread frost across the NC mountains and foothills this morning, as well as freezing temperatures in Avery County and at very high elevations of other mountain counties. 2. Temperatures trend warmer through Tuesday as skies remain mostly clear. However, cannot rule out very patchy frost in mountain valleys tonight into Monday morning. 3. Another cold front will bring rain to the area during the middle part of the upcoming week. The threat for severe weather with this system, while appearing low at this time, has started to trend upward in the new guidance.

DISCUSSION

Key message 1: Widespread frost across the NC mountains and foothills this morning, as well as freezing temperatures in Avery County and at very high elevations of other mountain counties.

Colder air is filtering into the region early this morning on light northwest winds aloft, associated with continental high pressure centered in the mid-Mississippi Valley. Skies are clear across the CWA except for some upslope clouds along the NC/TN border, which are on a diminishing trend and should not be a major inhibitor of radiational cooling. The gradient has already relaxed enough that decoupling has occurred in many rural areas. Confidence is high for frost occurrence within the existing Frost Advisory. Based on updated hourly temps and seeing a few sites have cooled more quickly than forecast, can`t rule out some very patchy frost in the NC I-40 corridor outside the Advisory, but think it is too isolated to warrant an expansion, particularly at this late hour. Dewpoints do not look likely to fall much more from current readings near freezing in those areas, so cooling probably will stop before a widespread freeze occurs in the mountains, though a freeze has already occurred on a few ridgetop obs and a few valley locations could experience a light freeze. Freeze Warning remains for Avery County where the zone average is likely to bottom out below 32. Key message 2: Temperatures trend warmer through Tuesday as skies remain mostly clear. However, cannot rule out very patchy frost in mountain valleys tonight into Monday morning… GSP WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES GA…Frost Advisory until 9 AM EDT this morning for GAZ010. NC…Frost Advisory until 9 AM EDT this morning for NCZ048>053-058- 059-062>065-501>506. Freeze Warning until 9 AM EDT this morning for NCZ033. SC…None.

New map is now out, and as expected, things are worse. The entire SE, from south TX up through WV and all along the eastern seaboard up to ME is 100% in drought. My state of #NCwx has gotten further into Extreme Drought. Two weeks of the map for my state. https://droughtmonitor.unl.edu/CurrentMap.aspx

#NCwx From NC’s Weather Authority on FB: A changing day is ahead across the state. Happy Wednesday, North Carolina! We will have maybe a couple of isolated showers around this morning, but most places will be dry and just partly to mostly cloudy. The rain has really dried up this morning a trend I talked about yesterday evening. We will then have a break, followed by this afternoon as a front moves in. We could see a few scattered showers/storms late this afternoon into the overnight across the state, depending on how well the atmosphere recovers. The focus area seems to be leaving the Foothills and moving into Central/parts of Eastern NC, but they seem scattered and isolated. We will see if the coverage gets going. There could be a limited severe weather threat, with gusty to potentially damaging winds from a storm or two, and maybe some hail. The tornado threat seems very low at this point. Severe weather is not guaranteed; it'll depend on how much sunshine and warming occur and whether we don't see too much dry air. Highs in the 60s and 70s for most areas, I'll pass along some radar updates ect today! -Ethan

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has officially declared the 2026 drought an agricultural disaster. This designation makes assistance available to producers and communities impacted by severe drought conditions. The primary counties included in this disaster declaration are: Transylvania, Buncombe, and Henderson. The contiguous counties are: Avery, Haywood, Jackson, McDowell, Madison, Franklin, Polk, and Yancey. #NCwx

New drought map today, and the worst areas are expanding, at least in this region. You lucky Texans... #Asheville #NCwx https://droughtmonitor.unl.edu/CurrentMap.aspx

Good morning, #Asheville Tuesday here starts at 35F which is almost unbelievable after all the early heat the region has had. No frost, probably because it's so incredibly dry. Warmer soon, but with luck not to the 90's again for a bit. Please send rain... #NCwx

A #weather statement from the #NWS issued for this afternoon, as our humidities plummet and the winds pick up. ...INCREASED FIRE DANGER FROM NOON EDT TODAY THROUGH THIS EVENING... Relative humidity values will fall into the 25 to 30 percent range again this afternoon, with winds increasing to around 10 to 15 mph with gusts of 15 to 25 mph. With vegetation remaining dry, the ongoing drought, and favorable meteorological conditions, fires will be able to catch and spread rapidly. A burn ban issued by the North Carolina Forest Service remains in effect across the entire state of North Carolina until further notice. #NCwx

The Southeast US drought map as of today. My region of Western NC is in one of the regions of extreme drought. El Niño will not make any of this better. Interactive, can get down to individual counties. https://droughtmonitor.unl.edu #NCwx #Fires #Drought

At 7:30, my region slightly SW of #Asheville has seen the first line of red storm pass by, so for a while we're in a steady rain area, before entering another yellow stretch. The leading edge is moving east, keep an eye out, friends. #NCwx

Morning, #Asheville 19F with more wind, but really just a heavy dusting of snow in my community. Areas further north got a couple of inches. Buncombe County schools are closed, again because of the risks to the school buses on the higher mountain roads. Chilly. #NCwx #Snow

Hey, #Asheville, put away those short sleeved shirts from the last few days, as we have 2 days of cold, snow and winds again. Nothing like what the northeast will be facing, however. Those 5 daffodils that bloomed yesterday will be in for a surprise. #NCwx #snow

Another blastingly cold morning here in #Asheville, but heating way up for 40F with luck today, so some of the snow will shift. 2.8F outdoors at the house, and very low humidity inside. Looking for at least a couple of warmer days. Thanks for going with me on the snowy adventure! #NCwx #Snow

Today the sun has found us again in #Asheville, and it is helping do some of the melting without it ever getting warm. Currently 22F but the macadam is clear and dry after the 2nd shoveling this morning. Low of 5F tonight, and more winds. Really beautiful. #NCwx #Snow

Night shoveling complete. That's roughly ten inches/25 cm deep. Crazy. New appreciation for those who have to do this often. Like more than every 25 years. Maybe tomorrow I can get some winter beauty pics and get out of this cranky old man phase. #NCWx #StormGianna

Getting to the end of the light here in #Asheville, still 13F with a -5 windchill. I should have gone out to remove the last 2" of snow, but what the heck... I'll wait until the temps double tomorrow. 😱 23F for the high. Friend's report is the roads are passable, but nothing you'd want to play with if one doesn't need to. And we don't need to. Heat is on, lights are on, there's running water. Tomorrow's Sunday. I hope everyone who wanted snow got some. #NCwx #Snow

Went to sweep off the snow between the patio and the crawlspace door, so I can turn the space heater on later (important pipes run through there) & it was massively cold. Currently 13F, with a -7F windchill. Real temps going down to 6F tonight. A few kids out trying to sled down on a hilly street nearby. At least it's dry snow, so good luck. Better than seeing the Honda trying to make their way up, and then someone behind them in the street, on their feet, pushing the car. I couldn't watch, they were both sliding back down the hill, just one misstep and disaster. Someone with a Jeep came and towed them. #NCwx #Snow
