I just made a one-time donation of $120 — the equivalent of $10/month — to
#mstdnca. It's the third year I’ve done it, so at this point I think that
@chad@mstdn.ca knows he can count on me.
If an alternative to corporate surveillance platforms is going to thrive, it's up to us as participants/members of our community to make sure that it's sustainable. Mastodon is the best alternative for me, and
#mstdnca is the community that I’ve been a part of for over three years now.
Whatever server/instance you’re on, please consider providing financial support to that instance. (Edited for clarity to add those last three words!)
And please consider sharing your knowledge/expertise with your admins to help make your server/instance work. The more capacity and resilience a community has, the better!

Hey Canadian Mastodonauts - here's where we're at.
We had some instability the last few days, and it's because the PostgreSQL server (the long term memory for our community) needed more resources.
Giving it more resources means we spend more money, so we went from USD$240 to USD$431/mo. This is, of course, unsustainable.
We're working hard to get this database moved in-house, so we can eliminate this cost, but we need to purchase an SSD and supporting hardware to do it.
We were grateful to receive a $250 donation from a community member. This would just about cover a 1TB NVMe drive, but we'd really like to put a 2TB drive in there to shut this database up for years to come.
At the moment, we have two months of reserves, and we should have three, so we're about $ 1,250 short of our goal.
If you can contribute, I'd be very grateful.
