For all you #YEGwx watchers, last night's brief but intense storm was just enough to make July 2026 the second rainiest month ever recorded in downtown Edmonton, surpassing last month's total. Yes, we have had the 2nd & 3rd rainiest months in the past 145+ years, back to back. With the forecast currently dry until Saturday night (August), that is hopefully where the monthly record will stand. But we're almost guaranteed to end 2026 as the highest-precipitation year ever measured.

@ned@beige.party I've been in Edmonton 15 years, and it's been consistent that we have rainy summers whenever there's an El Niño weather pattern globally. So when the news started mentioning a (global warming fueled) "Super El Niño" this year, I knew there an extra wet summer was likely. I didn't know it would be this extreme, and I didn't know for sure it was going to happen that way; it was possible that the "super" weather patterns could have shifted enough that we'd get dry weather like they've been having in Calgary. But I was expecting a switch back to rain after five La Niña influenced hot dry summers in a row. (There was one mild & dry El Niño winter in that stretch, but it flipped back before Canadian summer.) Anyone who tries to suggest that this is just random weather variation & not part of global climate change is just keeping themselves willfully ignorant. #YEGwx

Everyone knows the drill by now... Today's 21mm pushed Blatchford's July total up to 263.5mm. That's our 3rd biggest month on record. Coveted riverfront property in Edmonton! Motor boats sending wakes onto our little tropical islands! The lunchtime thunder & hail storm didn't seem too bad, but apparently there was enough debris in our storm drains already that this completely took out our street. I haven't walked over to check the big dry pond stormwater management system in the centre of Parkallen (opened a few years ago, sunken park/sports field that is supposed to fill up to hold water if the stormwater drains get overloaded). From the window it doesn't look full; it just looks like our street that is blocked. PS, for #YEG folks: They've updated the 311 website. Mostly nice, although I personally prefer one giant form instead of clicking through 4 short forms. (But they do have one complete review page.) Still doesn't have a way to modify/add a comment to your previous report, so I can't tell them that the water is draining, but slowly: the sidewalks are now clear. Wait. Raining hard again, that might not be true for long... #YEGwx

Update: The street is now a street again. I went out to clear sticks & mud from the drains & realized there was a driftwood tide line left behind on the shores of our temporary river. Before they did the major drainage work in the neighbourhood, it was common to have the street flood up to the curb level in a particularly intense summer thunderstorm downpour with hail. But I've never seen it flood quite this high! Also, the air is now very stinky again. That was a foul wind that blew no good, at all. #YEGwx

I don't mind the rain in Edmonton this month, really. (Especially with the reminder of summer wildfire season coming from Kelowna today!) But I really wish this weather system wasn't completely messing with the forecasts. As of yesterday, the forecast was for rain all day today & dry tomorrow. Instead, we had a nice sunny afternoon while I was doing indoor chores. And just when I was ready to go out to the garden, oh look big black clouds, let's do something else. But no rain & then sunny again, so I wrap that up & head outside just to get sprinkled on within minutes. OK, back inside until this cloud blows over. But now it's absolutely pouring, & tomorrow's forecast is mostly rain, too. Gonna go get soaked in the shower instead. It's warmer that way. Thursday's weather is supposed to be nice. 🙃 #YEGwx

Not 5th highest to date. 5th highest full-year total precipitation. With 5 months to go. (And that doesn't count all the snow from December 2025 that didn't melt until spring!) If it wasn't for all the observations of people with flooded streets (and basements) I'd think there was something wrong with the Blatchford station's rain gauge. Apologies to all the other parts of western Canada who really would like to get some of this rain. We'd send it your way if we could! ALT for all images in quoted thread: screenshots of the linked Tableau visualizations depicting the data described in the posts. #YEGwx
