Sometimes what we need to hear isn't "You can do it!" Or "Don't give up!" but instead "It's okay to realize something isn't working for you." Or "You can try again later." Or even "You didn't fail. You learned something, and that counts." Sometimes pushing hard and cheering someone on is helpful to them. But it's just as important to realize when someone needs your compassion and gentleness, and to hear that they're still wonderful in your eyes if they don't, or didn't, meet their goals.
