Personal Vault #011 I came across an interesting BBC article today about the return of digital cameras, iPods and wired earphones. At first glance, it looks like a nostalgia piece. But the part that caught my attention was much deeper. One of the people quoted in the article, Professor Andrew Przybylski from Oxford, talks about people wanting more control over their experiences. He contrasts modern digital services, where content is constantly pushed at us, with older devices where you deliberately choose what goes onto them. And then comes the point that really matters: People want more than simply renting the things they are passionate about. That is very close to the reason I started building Personal Vault. I am not trying to go backwards technologically. Quite the opposite. Personal Vault uses modern web technology, automation, AI-assisted tools and eventually its own authentication system. But all of that technology is supposed to work for me. My films should be mine. My photos should be mine. My documents should be mine. My memories should not depend on whether a company changes its subscription, closes a service, removes a feature or decides I am no longer allowed access. Maybe the renewed interest in old technology is not really about old technology at all. Maybe it is about control, ownership and intentionality. And if that is the case, then perhaps the idea behind Personal Vault is not quite as unusual as I thought. Xbox cut 3,200 jobs and divested five studios this week. Some are calling it bad luck, but it's not really— it's the bill for five years of buying studios it couldn't fund, cancelling exclusives, and giving away the ones that worked. And it just handed Sony a blank check on ending discs too. https://blog.ppb1701.com/xbox-didnt-get-unlucky-it-got-managed-this-way #xbox #gaming #microsoft #layoffs #gamepass #activisionblizzard #sony #playstation #digitalownership #bigtech #insertcoin #userhostile #blog

PlayStation discs will soon be gone!

Wtf #sony ?

The #playstation account announced in a blog post that they will stop making game discs altogether. http://play.st/4v86Wg3

This means :

  • No buying second hand. Once the game is not sold anymore nobody can buy it
  • Can not bring the game to someone's house and play together, now you need to log into your account
  • Sony can, for any or no reason remove a game from your library
  • If you paid extra for a PS5 with a disc drive, too bad, you can't use the drive you paid extra for with games beyond 2028!
  • Overall, a very slippery slope for ownership.

GOG has weighed in on the digital ownership debate. The company stated: "Even if a game is removed from the GOG store, it never leaves your library. Exactly how digital ownership should work." The comment comes as discussions continue across the industry about what it means to truly own digital games. #GOG #PlayStation #DigitalOwnership #GamingNews
