La communication du CERN est bien ficelée et a pour unique but, nous faire croire que la recherche fondamentale en physique des particules est une condition nécessaire à la continuation de la vie humaine sur Terre.

Le CERN repose sur un porte-à-faux normatif. Côté pile, il revendique une science éthérée, neutre, pure affaire de l’esprit, qui justifie de ne pas être expliquée en détail au profane. Sous cet angle, les applications en aval ne relèvent pas de ses prérogatives. Côté face, il entend développer des partenariats « utiles à la société » ; Raphaël Bello insiste sur le rôle structurant du CERN aux échelles régionales, nationales et internationales.

Le FCC est un énième exemple de la fuite en avant du libéralisme.

En réponse à l’obsolescence du LHC, le CERN ne semble pas avoir d’alternative au développement d’un outil superlatif comme le FCC, indépendamment du fait que la théorie soit cette fois-ci en retard par rapport à la technologie.

Super pleased to write and post the winner announcement post for @freecad@social.freecad.org first ever #community #design competition which I co-ordinated. Not quite the end of the work on the project but good to have a first iteration of the process done and dusted. Also ace that the outputs are cleanly designed and needed parts for #openscience, and all licensed with the great #opensource #CERN OHL V2 licence means that they actually may make a difference in the world. I remember as a science-journalism student in London following the live stream from #CERN when the #LHC had its first collisions in March 2010. I remember the glee during my first visit to the lab in June that year. I remember my first day working at CERN that September and my several visits to the LHC’s cavernous underground spaces to see the #CMSExperiment, many as a tour guide. Today #CERN released its #KiCad component library to the public. They are licensed CERN-OHL-P-2.0 Thank you OSPO ❤️ for getting this done. Originally the library is made in Altium and will also be maintained in Altium. The repo only contains files that have been automatically converted. It is a database library which contains only fully specified parts. There are lots of weird connectors. Have fun exploring. https://home.cern/computing/cerns-kicad-component-library-now-open-source/

📰 "#CERN będzie gospodarzem flagowej europejskiej platformy wydawniczej opartej na zasadach otwartego dostępu #OpenAccess W ramach ważnego kroku na rzecz otwartej nauki CERN został wybrany na gospodarza nowego etapu inicjatywy Open Research Europe (ORE), wspieranej przez Komisję Europejską oraz nowe konsorcjum finansujące, w skład którego wchodzą europejskie krajowe agencje finansujące i organizacje badawcze. Inicjatywa ta, zgodna z planem działania na rzecz otwartego dostępu typu „Diamond” (2022) [1], stanowi kierowaną przez społeczność alternatywę dla tradycyjnego publikowania naukowego. Kiedy nowa platforma ORE zostanie uruchomiona jeszcze w tym roku, uprawnienia autorskie zostaną rozszerzone o naukowców powiązanych z instytucjami w krajach uczestniczących w konsorcjum. Publikowanie pozostanie całkowicie bezpłatne zarówno dla naukowców finansowanych przez Komisję Europejską, jak i autorów z krajów uczestniczących. Celem jest promowanie równości, różnorodności i przejrzystości w komunikacji naukowej przy zachowaniu wysokich standardów jakości i rzetelności. Konsorcjum finansujące ORE składa się obecnie z członków z Austrii, Francji, Niemiec, Włoch, Holandii, Norwegii, Portugalii, Słowenii, Hiszpanii, Szwecji i Szwajcarii [2]. Komisja Europejska uczestniczy w pracach organu zarządzającego jako stały obserwator i zapewnia dedykowane wsparcie finansowe. CERN zapewni infrastrukturę techniczną i operacyjną platformy, opartą na oprogramowaniu open source Open Journal Systems (OJS), natomiast zarządzanie i nadzór redakcyjny pozostaną w gestii konsorcjum ORE." Antiprótons da fábrica de antimatéria do CERN fazem sua primeira viagem | ERC Hoje, cientistas da Organização Europeia para a Pesquisa Nuclear (CERN) transportaram um dispositivo contendo antiprótons por caminhão através das instalações principais do laboratório, demonstrando uma nova maneira de manipular essas partículas. Os pesquisadores usarão essa capacidade para transportar antimatéria para outros laboratórios, possibilitando estudos mais precisos. Interesting case from #CERN where #Russia team leaving the project sabotaged continued operations of the module they delivered by refusing to supply documentation on its operations, thus threatening continuity of the project: When CERN definitively ended its cooperation with Russia, engineers were left with Russian equipment for which complete documentation was lacking. Shutting down the equipment threatened to paralyse the key ALICE experiment. That’s when the Poles stepped in, figured out how the Russian equipment worked, reverse engineered it, and not only saved the project, but became key players in the Large Hadron Collider. Krystian Rosłon from the Warsaw University of Technology revealed the details of this incredible operation to the PAP Nauka news agency. Today at #CERN sure was a day, got to see CLIC a cute little linac, and then a look through the Antimatter factory, including ELANA, Gbar, the Antiproton decelerator, and AEgIS. Pictures are in that order.
