@amphianna @eclectech @AmeliasBrain I was taught to do this on purpose as both a solo and choral singer. "Ee" sounds nasty and is hard to sing powerfully (try it!), so we sing a more open vowel and maybe slide to "ee" right at the end. I doubt very much it began in 90s pop, especially since classical performers have to think more about projecting sound out than pop stars in studios with mics, and aren't usually too concerned with words sounding "natural".
