A little after 5pm ET today, old man Spike transitioned off this mortal coil. Thanks to all of you who’ve expressed your loving words. He was an incredibly vibrant, sweet-natured, resilient, & idiosyncratic cat & I treasure the 19 years he graced my life. Rest well, Spike. #RIP #Cats #Loss #Love

Spike has let us know his time on this planet is coming to an end. I am heartbroken & also forever grateful to him for his 19 years of wonderful companionship. Ken and I have been talking about whether or not to post photos of Rai on our social media accounts. We don’t want to expose him to the sort of vitriol and hatred that is possible online, and at the same time, we want to celebrate him, and we want to share images of our family as a way to advocate for same-sex parenting and surrogacy. So we don’t know the answers yet, but I wanted to share where we are with it at the moment, which is weighing all of the different factors at play.

Over on the bird app, my announcement of the birth of our child was met with tons of happily supportive posts, but also a fair number of grossly homophobic and virulently anti-surrogacy posts. Ken and I are thrilled to share that our family has grown! 💜🌟

Our son, Rai Larson Ithiphol, was brought into the world on Friday, December 2, 2022, by an incredibly generous surrogate, to whom we are eternally grateful. (Rai is pronounced like “rye” or “chai.”)

We love him very much.

I have to admit, it’s pretty wild seeing such momentous events compressed into a timeline. There was such a clear cut *before* and *after* as my life was utterly transformed by being in RENT all those years ago. I celebrate & explore all of that (& more) in my show #WithoutYou
