@thelastpsion@oldbytes.space I don't think many people understand this or that it's true of virtually everything that we do that actually takes creativity. You code, you're going to spend years coding badly before you become elegant. You play musical instruments, you're going to play badly and practice a lot to get mediocre. But after you practice being mediocre long enough, you suddenly discover that you've actually gotten pretty good. It just takes a long time. If you're a sculptor, you're liable to make an awful lot of junk and paperweights and door stops, no matter what it was you intended to make, until something clicks, and it's suddenly not door stops anymore. It's like that actor that's an overnight success after only 40 years of trying. All through those 40 years they were getting better in learning and being seen by people until they became unforgettable. That was their art. And that's how long it took. And don't get me started on how many brilliant, imaginative, creative writers with all the potential in the world are waiting tables and selling cars because they have to eat. If only someone was there to tell us not to stop creating just to survive, we can do both.

@protonprivacy the both parts bother me. The first is for those laws that require you to submit an ID and probably a government ID that identifies you absolutely and that goes into a database. How many databases with IP information have not been broken into in the last decade? That's a much smaller number than the number of ones that have not been broken into. But then the second part is when you use a computer anytime you connect to something or get a service from something, it gets to say, hey, are you a juvenile and it gets an answer. So the predators know exactly where the next victim is. Sure, the honest services can protect those potential victims. But how good a job have they done of that already? If that was a priority, and if any of them, even one, was really good at that job of protecting the potential victims, we wouldn't be considering these laws to begin with. This is a plan that's likely to generate a feeding frenzy!

@gemini0 @hailey @fraggle if I recall correctly, Novell had an IP stack for DOS that worked on any version of DOS from 3.1 up It also worked on the Windows 95. And now a bunch of TCPIP services. And X would work on it, but I can't remember who had the port for that, if it was Novell or another party. I remember setting up a hospital in clinic with leftover PCs that were cheap, running DOS as terminals into their database application, emulating a wise terminal, and communicating using TCPIP over their network. That actually kept them state-of-the-art on the cheap for about 10 of the best years of my professional life.

@protonprivacy@mastodon.social I am concerned about those proposals that require a centralization of intellectual property and identity. Because governments are not well known for keeping those kinds of things secure or preventing them from being misused. Even the distributed solutions that only have the machine reporting the age group of the user account is problematic. Because then the machine becomes a beacon telling all of the predators that here is a potential victim. That may be security for the web portals, but it's certainly NOT security for the children! I get the feeling that the people who write these prospective laws never asked any independent security personnel. (The likelihood is that every one of those proposals was written by a lobbyist with a vested interest.) they seem to take the security onus from the web service site and put it in the wind. Making a change that does away with any sense of security whatsoever.

I was nearly an adult when I discovered Tolkien and I had kids of my own by the time Harry Potter published. Tolkien was a language nerd and I kind of identify with that. I even liked Rowling until we found out who she was. But I've never had a problem confusing an author with their works or an actor with their character.

@semitones@tiny.tilde.website @protonprivacy@mastodon.social To be a true Google replacement, all of the vendors would have to write their drivers so that they could be incorporated into either Android or this new probably Linux-based phone operating system. We already have solutions that work for one or two or twelve different models or vendors, but all of the rest of the cell phone ecosystem is currently out of reach. I propose an alternative, a version of Android that belongs to the community, but will use the vendor's drivers and can replace Google Android with the community android. Google will, of course, attempt to make that technically impossible and illegal if they can, because that's what monopolies do.

Connecting to the onion network and using Tor tools does kind of help but only solves half of the problem. far better to work from Linux instead of Android where you have the option but in my case that means not using the cell phone for that particular traffic or anything that requires real security.

At least not if you're a normal adult. It doesn't make sense to go through your entire life being so fearful of the people around you. And yet, they embrace that fear. I would feel sorry for them if they were not so obnoxious.

Everything the contemplate that would cut back on the damage due to climate change would be good if there were no climate change. It would make the world and life better for everyone except the millionaire class. Technically, it would make it better for everyone, period, but some of the richest people might not be quite as rich For 99.2% of the population of the earth, everything to solve climate change would be an improvement.

@Wuzzy@cyberplace.social I believe that as a site for distributing videos, there are far better non-commercial choices than commercial. So why is YouTube successful? because you can make money at it. If you make a popular series of videos and you get enough subscribers, you can make bank. You can actually make a living PeerTube is technically vastly superior to YouTube, but it will never replace it, because you can't put up a video that makes you a profit. That then is the rub. How do you put up videos and make money for doing it at a site that is not corrupted? When we discover the answer to that, the magic happens.

(Which predated that Google obscenity significantly and is nothing whatsoever like it.) it's a bit like the web when it was HTML 1.0 and Netscape, crossed with Archie. Like webpages only with very few graphics, no scripting, and a lot of very simple, easily readable text It avoids all the enshittification that has gone on since the WEB became saturated with criminal and corporate entities. (and good luck telling the difference.)

@scottwhat @Daojoan Vivaldi is a major browser with built-in RSS. I really prefer a standalone RSS reader that is configurable. (On Linux) But If you consider the only major browsers Chrome or Mozilla, then you are out if luck. I depend heavily on RSS and will as long as it's an option.
