My computer has no knowledge of my age or birthdate, reports me as "adult" to websites who are legally incentivized to use that instead of their own data collection (not that I expect corporations to stop, but it's better to incentivize privacy seeking behavior than not).
The "cop" metaphor is incorrect. My computer is under my control and I tell it when and if to report my "adult" status. Rephrasing the question: whose responsibility is it to decide what is age appropriate? Under CA and CO law it is the device owner. Under OH law it is the website communicating with the state. My position is that one of these is obviously better, the one where the user has control of their status, shares it under their discretion, and no identifiable information is collected or transmitted.
I understand that some people would prefer neither but that dismisses that one can be used to fight the other, but only if distributed with the OS. For people outside the US, maybe the idea of using state laws to fight other state laws may seem weird but it's not unprecedented.

@burnitdown@beige.party @davidgerard@circumstances.run I might agree depending on your definition of "age restrictions". The OS should not be collecting, let alone transmitting, identifiable information. Neither the CA or CO law do that.
The use of age signals or not should be optional. I want to use them to increase my online privacy. If someone would rather be jumping through online age verification hoops per website, I support their freedom to do so.
Years ago I was exfiltrating protest videos from YouTube to post elsewhere. Most of those videos were flagged "adult only" due to police violence. To gain access to them I had to create an account and attest to my age to an evil corporate entity. I'd prefer an Internet where a website asks my computer if I'm an adult and my computer responds "yes" and I get on with my task. I'd also prefer people in Ohio fighting their anti-lgbtq+ age restriction law(s) with the precedent of the CA and CO laws.

@burnitdown@beige.party @davidgerard@circumstances.run My position is that laws allowing the bypassing internet / application age restrictions through control of one's computer is better than any and all laws that require turning over id to one or more third parties. I recommend even a cursory read of California / Colorado law vs Ohio law to understand that these are not only not comparable laws but they are actively adversarial.

@violetmadder @TheGreatLlama that doesn't match my observations. UK has had over 40 years of strident efforts to privatize and they've barely moved the needle. Privatization remains unpopular to the degree that political candidacies advocating complete privatization are non-viable. I don't see this as "hopeful"; people don't give up the benefits they rely on, which is why universal benefits are such a powerful, society reshaping policy.

@violetmadder @TheGreatLlama I think Canadians are often misjudged as "US-light" which significantly underestimates them. About 25 years ago I knew Canadians who were worried Canada would follow the US into US-style dystopianism. That didn't happen and I have not found Canadians who are worried about that anymore. I'm not saying these countries don't have their issues, especially around racism and colonialism, but most high quality of life countries have a citizenry with a developed sense of the US as cautionary tale, especially with regard to healthcare. That's why there has been so much money spent on preventing the US from getting healthcare. The fear among the aristocracy is that even the passive US will not give up healthcare once they have it.

@TheGreatLlama really can't overstate how much better healthcare is there. Though there's no place free of white supremacy, their early abolition of slavery led to white supremacists moving to the US and abolitionists moving to Canada. That led to differences that are still observable today.
