Thoughts on recent Codeberg ToC changes Hover or focus to reveal Sensitive
The same issue applies to cryptocurrency. What are ‘cryptocurrency-related projects’? Can OpenSSL be considered a ‘cryptocurrency-related project’? And that’s not to mention the fact that cryptocurrency - specifically Bitcoin and Monero - is the only way for vulnerable groups in authoritarian countries to get some money. 🧵 #codeberg #llm #llmcoding #ai #codebergbans #opensource #freesoftware #foss #censorship #bitcoin #monero #crypto #cryptocurrency

There’s also a big problem with the wording. The ToC states, ‘you must not share projects that mostly consist of code written by “generative AI” tools’. What does ‘mostly’ mean? What does ‘written by’ mean? What percentage of LLM code is allowed, and what percentage isn’t? If someone copies code from ChatGPT and changes the variable names, is that ‘written by’ an LLM or not? Who’s going to check this? A special Codeberg police force? There’s far too much vague wording. They might as well have just written ‘we do not allow projects we personally don't like’ in the ToC. 🧵 #codeberg #llm #llmcoding #ai #codebergbans #opensource #freesoftware #foss #censorship #bitcoin #monero #crypto #cryptocurrency

DISCLAIMER: I don't use LLMs, I despise LLMs usage, I think it's boring, erodes creativity and thinking process, and is highly unethical. Codeberg just banned LLM and cryptocurrency projects. While I agree that LLMs suck hard, I don't really agree with that decision. My biggest concern is that I don’t know if my projects will be safe in the future, since Codeberg is no longer simply a Git forge that prohibits non-free licenses, but it now bans code that a small (358-person) group of people disapproves. The problem with this is that, in the future, any code could be targeted. Let me remind you that in Russia, where internet whitelists have already been introduced in some regions, website blocking began in the 2010s under the guise of ‘protecting children’ and the fight against drugs. Tomorrow, for whatever reason, C# might become persona non grata, and Codeberg might ban all code written in C#. Then, for some reason, Codeberg might ban code written by people of a certain nationality. It’s a slippery slope. 🧵 #codeberg #llm #llmcoding #ai #codebergbans #opensource #freesoftware #foss #censorship #bitcoin #monero #crypto #cryptocurrency
