I got into computing because I didn't have to ask permission, and I was rewarded for trying. Today I feel that my job is to find more creative ways to get permission just to do even basic tasks. I'm sitting with this feeling, and I"m not ok with it.

1998: Everything was in config files or source files; documentation was often sparse; finding an answer to a question often involved lots of trying, some discussion, and sometimes failure and moving on. 2026: Everything is on a service platform or AI gated; documentation is often wrong; finding an answer involves being told lots of wrong things by search, support AIs, and trying isn't really an option anymore. You don't get to fail, you are just told no.

Background- SSPX runs schools that serve as indoctrination programs for future priests. The whole point of doing this is because recruitment of clergy for the roman catholic church has been down for decades. SSPX was trying to run a numbers game to take over the church. That just got stomped on.

@timixretroplays@digipres.club What matters when the heat is this high is the relative humidity. I have no idea what that is in the regions experiencing this heat. The Guardian leaves this out entirely. 40C with high humidity and no wind will kill people. 40C with low humidity is a lot less lethal. edit- Humidity is around 16% in Bordeaux, at least. That just makes it hot, and not lethal.

@edwintorok@discuss.systems @amydiehl@mstdn.social You obviously have to have a name to know who you are talking to on the phone. But the CV review process is where candidates get weighted, and that weighting needs to be done as fairly as possible. I would annotate weighting scores for each candidate, and then ask people who assisted in the call screenings why they rated someone higher or lower if it didn't match the blind review score. Bias is pretty easy to find among the screeners with this method.

@amydiehl@mstdn.social This is why I always insisted that whoever received the resumes in HR replace the names with a serial number before passing it on to another HR person to review. I could only do this for my ops team, but it made a hugely positive difference in the quality of candidates we ended up with.

@catsalad@infosec.exchange I had a cat like that. Half Manx, half something huge. Sweet boy, but he would absolutely not put up with aggression from other animals. He would terrorize a pair of dobermans down the block that tried attacking him once, and calmly go eat their food whenever he wanted an extra snack.

@brennen Knotted ropes are probably superior to clay tablets and index cards (if we had kept the knowledge to read them properly), in that the warp and weft, as well as the textures of textiles, all had specific meanings. People could keep detailed date based information on their entire lives in one set of knots. I think there is exactly ONE scientist trying to recreate this, because much of how to read these were lost due to colonialism in the West.

@hacks4pancakes Damn. After my AR commitment was up, I made a point of using several fake mailing addresses that would bounce mail back the slowest way possible. Used phone numbers to people who knew me but didn't know where I was. That was during the first Gulf War, but they are probably better about following up on that stuff now. Sucks. Hope missing mail doesn't cause any other issues for you.
