I live under a rock, occasionally emerging when the slugs run out of beer and start whining. Not quite round enough to be a roly-poly bug. Prone to odd humor.

This week I tested a new WiFi connected trail camera by leaving it on the ground outside my bedroom window. I was rather surprised to capture a very long beak briefly popping into view, followed by one hemisphere of a borb and some peet peet peet noises. I knew we have woodcocks in the area, but I had no idea they were poking around outside my window in the wee hours. #bird

Please, for the love of sanity, do not hide your weed infested area by covering it with plastic sheeting and a layer of bark mulch. Two years from now you will have a bunch of weeds growing in rotting mulch with a layer of plastic underneath. Removing the resulting mess is a PITA. Use brown paper underneath, if you really want a bark mulch aesthetic. It will last as long as the mulch, and you can till it in later. #gardening

It's hard being a very inquisitive dog confronted with strange human behavior. I've had a few small cobbles going in a rock tumbler for the past week. Tonight we decanted them and carefully wiped them off for inspection. Dog was mystified. We were so intent on the project. Why? He tried sniffing them. He tried tasting them. He poked at one with a paw and concluded it wasn't a ball. Why? Why? Why are the humans being so weird tonight? What's wrong with them? #dog

In social media elsewhere, I got an ad for a dog rain suit with clear hood. The picture shows a Labrador wearing it. The size chart, however, says a 2XL (the largest size) is for dogs that max out at 22 pounds. Someone with very small dogs is very good with Photoshop.

Someone visiting my house noticed the beaver dam in the back yard and opined we should get rid of the beavers because they cause flooding. I really don't understand this knee-jerk hatred of wildlife doing its thing. We have no intention of hassling the beavers. We also own the land on both ends of the dam. That will make it harder for anyone else to hassle the beavers.

Every spring I feel like a terrible nature steward. Last year it was the baby bunnies whose mother thought inside the dog run was a great place to park her litter. (The dogs agreed for their own reasons.) This year is is the rotted tree we left in place for the woodpeckers. The hollow is now deep enough that wood ducks are trying to nest in it. So far we have found 4 eggs that rolled out of the tree. Egg # 5 is now precariously balanced in the hollow. Monitoring with concern.
