Had three hours to kill in a waiting room today, and to my delight that turned out to be *exactly* enough time to read through the first Murderbot Diaries book.

I get why everyone likes these books now. This is quite possibly the most autistically-coded character of all time.

If I had a nickel for every time a movie villain from a Disney-adjacent studio had a plot to build a freeway through the habitat of a group of non-human characters, only to be revealed to be a member of that group in a human suit at the end of the movie, I'd have two nickels. But it's weird that it happened twice.

Hello? Yes, a moment of your time, if you please. I'm the Vampire Crawlers boss you've been fighting, and I'm not sure if you're aware of the fact that I've been dead for the last 10 minutes.

I mean, what are you even doing over there? You've played every card in your deck 4 times this hand alone, and somehow you're still on the same combo! Go ahead and deal another 500k in damage, but then could you kindly wrap up this hand so I can explode in a shower of coins? It would be most appreciated.

For several months now TypeScript v6/v7 has had an incomplete version of the WebGPU types in their "dom" library, which caused errors in WebGPU apps. The last of the missing symbols was added 2 weeks ago, so you can now follow the instructions here to fix it:

https://github.com/gpuweb/types#integration-into-dom-type-definitions

When Jurassic Park came out I was Tim's age. I was obsessed. It was my favorite movie by a long shot, and Alan Grant was a superhero in my eyes.

Now I'm Alan Grant's age, the movie is still one of my favorites, and I'm very sad that my childhood hero is gone. Thanks for the memories, Sam!

Serious question: Can we get an American equivalent to Count Binface to highlight how absurd some of our politicians are?

And if you just asked "Who?" Oh boy are you about to fall down a delightful rabbit hole. https://youtu.be/xRB2mwBVb3c

@glassbottommeg@mastodon.gamedev.place The original idea was to make the big square section in the middle a touchscreen, which would have been fun, but it's probably for the best that the principle of "players shouldn't have to keep looking down at their hands while playing" won out.

(Although at least they didn't go with their *first* design for the Steam Controller. They were kinda unusable.) Very happy the new one is basically a screen less Steam Deck!

Had a dream last night that I signed up for a college class called "Understanding Vulkan" which turned out to be a metalworking class, which was cool but the professor didn't appreciate me complaining that the distinction between "Vulkan" and "Vulcan" was important in the class title.

After MUCH not-so-subtle hinting that I should be using AI at my job I gave it a fair shot on a tricky bug I've been looking at.

It spun it's wheels for a while, suggested a change that added hundreds of lines and didn't actually alter the bug behavior, and upon further prompting stopped mid-process and said "wait, this is harder than I thought. I suggest you ask the team responsible for this code for help."

That's me. I'm on that team.

Feeling even better about my AI-free workflow now.

Parts of my job that I enjoy:
- Designing systems
- Writing elegant code
- Learning new things
- Solving interesting problems
- Sharing knowledge

Parts of my job I don't enjoy:
- Reviewing other people's code
- Debugging systems I'm not familiar with
- Blindly using poorly documented interfaces
- Dependency hell
- Being forced into the latest fad

AI enthusiasts: "What if I told you I've solved one of those lists for you?" 😏

Anyone have a recommendation for a good library of Web Components?

Looking for components to support single page tools like split views and tabs. Ideally very few dependencies, definitely no React, no requirement for custom build steps please.

I've used Shoelace in the past, but they've become "WebAwesome" now and I'm not sure I get great vibes from it?

@gumnos As far as maintenance, the big thing we were told is to try and clean them yearly for optimum output. We'll have to see what the real maintenance cost is going forward, but my understanding is it's expected to be relatively minimal over the ~20yr lifespan of the system. Insurance wasn't ever brought up. And we purchased outright. The installers gave us several options, but all of them ended with us owning the panels.

@etchedpixels Yeah, though at least when I bought there were still government subsidies available. Not so much with the current administration. And while it is indeed expensive to install here compared to the rest of the world, we're also paying way higher rates for electricity too, so it balances it out a bit. We expect the system to have paid for itself in ~6 years.

@in_sympathy ROI on the panels/batteries was estimated to be 6 years, and it looks like we're on track for that. The system is rated for 20 years+, so we'll definitely be getting our money's worth out of them. I never evaluated ROI on the car (I was going to buy a new one anyway, so that made it simpler.)

Now the Caveats:

  • Obviously the initial purchase costs of the solar+EV outweighs the savings in the first year.
  • I live in California, we get more sun than average.
  • My work offers free EV charging, which accounts for maybe 1/3 of my charging.
  • I'm not factoring in utility price hikes.

A year ago I installed solar panels+batteries, and now have a year of electric bills to compare. 2024: $4,133.13 2025: $655.62! The entire year was less than the previous year's July bill. Also got an EV last year so that amount ALSO includes my "gas" costs from charging at home. (~$1500/year with my prev gas car.) Hard to think of a pair of purchases I've been happier with!

@unconed@mstdn.io For texture views/descriptors/etc creating them every frame is less overhead than you'd think, especially because the native equivalent objects are cached by the WebGPU implementation. The JS wrappers are small and should be caught in early GC passes, which are far less expensive.
