@internic @johncarlosbaez yeah I might have thought Dawkins of all people would be more careful about this usage, but philosophers often use it in exactly this sense, i.e. "for what?" means "serves what functional purpose?". I think using it colloquially like this is dangerous though, since it implies that every trait of a biological organism or a culture must have some adaptive or functional purpose, when we know that is clearly not true--some things are just random.
