RE: @verge@mastodon.social

The only stories to pay attention to around OpenAI relate to (1) the psychopath grifter that is the company's CEO, and (2) the fact that markets and the general public are quickly coming to see the company as "WeWork 2.0."

This isn't a company-wide memo, it's a press release. None of these attempts to control the narrative will work in the end, by the way, as the underlying financials are simply too bad.

RE: @alienghic@timeloop.cafe

The insistence that software developers accede to the gaslighting around AI really is something.

“We built this technology to replace you, but we also want to gaslight you regarding your planned obsolescence. Please sit here quietly and allow us to present our case as to why we’re seeking to destroy your profession.”

RE: @shituationist@kolektiva.social

One of the more interesting developments over the last year or so is the rise of skills/rules being put into markdown docs and then fed into LLMs, in the hope this cargo culting will appease the gods.

This is, of course, insane.

How a sector that asks, at every turn, for respectability, can behave in this manner is unbelievable.

Again: watching software development destroy itself has been quite weird. The sector will never recover from this.

@Lightfighter The worst part about this is the Reaganites, today, are the establishment Democrats, and they control the Democratic party and make damned sure that nothing progressive ever makes it into policy. All against the clear wishes of Democratic voters. The US governing system is so captured that nothing short of revolution can seemingly fix it.

@jonny I’m fascinated by the breakdown you’re having today, and, trust me, this is commiseration not me being patronizing. But…are people just now realizing that these models are just a human centipede? Which is to say “a bunch of models sutured together, ass-to-mouth, one feeding excrement to the next?” Because, I mean, that’s all they are. A human centipede of LLMs constructed by overpaid morons.

RE: @wired@flipboard.com

The way American capitalism has degraded into something so tawdry is bizarre. Between pretending "prediction markets" aren't gambling and the growth and growth of crypto, it's just an insane time we live in.

And **none** of this would've happened without elite buy-in. It's the elite institutions of our system who've said, "you know, let's just allow all this criminality because we benefit from it."

Really time the ruling class in America reacquaints itself with the guillotine.

@glyph @xgranade @cthos I love that even TechCrunch can't find a picture of Garry Tan that makes him look like a normal person with normal emotional responses and cognitive processes. This is, of course, because such a picture does not exist, as he's the dumbest fucking person you'll ever meet, and an actual fascist to boot.

Omg, none of this is true in the least.

Altman is admitting that LLMs will not achieve "AGI," and straining to not say what I've been saying for a couple years: that transformer-based LLMs are at the limits of their capabilities.

There are no new model architectures on the horizon. None. LeCun just got $1B to continue work on his Jepa models that (1) went nowhere, and (2) got him fired from Meta.

The amount of disinformation out there is startling.

RE: @eschaton@mastodon.social

We went from "plagiarism is bad," to "what I'm doing isn't plagiarism,"* to "you know, maybe plagiarism is okay now, ackshually" in a matter of months.

I cannot tell you how happy I am to be leaving tech. The next 2-5 years will be a parade of horrors. The closest analogy I can come up with is the tech sector as spaceship, and they just brought a Xenomorph on board: "oh, this will be just fine, just put those vaguely menacing eggs over in the corner."

*It, in fact, is plagiarism.

RE: @olivia@scholar.social

Unsurprisingly, from the first sentence it's a lie:

"In the five years since Anthropic began, AI progress has moved incredibly quickly."

No, actually it hasn't. We're still using transformers, developed in late 2017; in fact, we're **hopelessly dependent upon them with nothing else in sight.**

Progress has stalled, despite endless hype. For example, where are those "agents?" Where are they? Can someone, anyone point to a successful, profitable agent? Anyone?

This is all such a terrible joke.
