@cannibal@infosec.exchange isn't it nice to be able to fix stuff rather than replace it? @mbroome@infosec.exchange has swapped out the control board in our 20-year-old washer twice now - it's a "dumb" Fisher & Paykel with no fancy features, just does a really good job of cleaning clothes and staying out of my way. I dread the day I have to replace it with some modern monstrosity that wants Internet connectivity and an app...

"When the people who built and operated your cloud would rather knead dough than touch a terminal again, that’s not a career pivot. That’s a trauma response." https://www.seuros.com/blog/aws-fired-the-human-who-made-the-difference/ The enshittification escalates... I walked away from tech almost four years ago with a case of burnout you could see from space. The intervening three years have only made me more grateful that I left when I did. (I wish all my friends and colleagues still chained to the oars had my opportunity.) #aws #layoffs #burnout #ai

#makeShitMonday, in which I pivot and tally another FO! My sister's birthday is coming up next week, so I put the problematic cowl on hold and focused on finishing the Totoro amigurumi for her... This pattern is pretty light on detail - basically just stitch counts for each row of each component, with, no guidance on assembly. Fortunately, I had the original Totoro I made for @mbroome@infosec.exchange a couple years ago, as a guide! I'd made all the little pieces at Convention, and the body went pretty quickly. Attaching the appendages isn't difficult, just tedious... I cranked up the My Neighbor Toronto soundtrack for the last bits, and that helped me stay focused. Amazingly, I even found the leftover felt and button-eyes from the first round in my disaster of a craft room, so I didn't have to go re-source them! 🎉 (Apparently I totally failed to document how I added whiskers the first time, so I re-invented that wheel with some waxed-cotton cord, and I think it worked out well...) This one ended up just a bit smaller than the first one - it's made with the same size hook, but I used one of my nicer crochet hooks and my tension must have been tighter. Good to remember for next time - and I took copious notes on all the other fiddly bits, too. 😊 @cannibal@infosec.exchange @crafters@fedigroups.social

#MakeShitMonday, in which I cannot catch a break. My initial plan of making a second #crochet cowl worked, to the extent that I had enough yarn left on the hat-skein to get a good start on a second cowl for @mbroome@infosec.exchange, which I started more loosely (foundation double-crochet, rather than double-crocheting into a foundation chain) so it would fit over his bigger head. At which point it became obvious that the Malabrigo single-skein-dye-lots gotcha was going to bite me in the ass. Because the cowl I made from the second skein was distinctly brighter - and of course a better match for the hue of the hat - than the original cowl. And nobody but me would know... But I *would* know. So I thought, no problem, I'll just give him the cowl I made for me... But the foundation chain was too tight for him to get it on comfortably. So I thought, no problem, I'll just rip out the foundation chain and re-chain the first row with a looser approach... But after multiple laborious hours, when I finally got it re-chained, it was looser - but still not loose enough. I had an idea for how to rip and re-do the foundation chain *again*, but as @mbroome@infosec.exchange and I were on our afternoon walk and I was bemoaning my plight, he observed that I didn't seem to be having fun anymore. Which, frankly, I'm not. So I think I'm going to cut my losses and just frog the damn thing and re-do it with the foundation double-crochet... 🤷🏻‍♀️ Also, everyone's a comedian - @mbroome@infosec.exchange: "I'm sorry this is turning into such a hassle!" Me: "It's okay, I'm just being stubborn about it." @mbroome@infosec.exchange: "Hm. And it keeps changing shape. So I guess that makes it... Cowl's Moving Hassle!" Me: *punches him in the arm* @cannibal@infosec.exchange @crafters@fedigroups.social

Today was #TomatoDay at our local #farmersmarket! I picked up a collection of heirloom varieties to do a #tomato tasting board... Clockwise from top: White Queen Early Girl Yellow beefsteak Chinese sugar tomato Black Beauty Red beefsteak Copia (center) It is Too Damn Hot for complicated cooking, so we picked up some sushi-grade tuna at the market fishmonger and just did a quick sesame-seared tuna to go with our tomato bounty. (And some balsamic vinegar & shaved parmigiano to go on the tomatoes, once we'd done our comparison tasting!) The red and orange beefsteak were the most vivid tomato flavor. Copia was milder, white queen also mild and a little sweet. I think the black beauty was my favorite - it was somehow more rich along with the acidity...

@peterrenshaw@ioc.exchange I think any big company will have some level of chaos and non-shipped products. We had it at Juniper, I saw it second-hand at Cisco... The difference to me is that everyone I knew at Juniper who was working on a product that didn't ship cared deeply about the potential customers, right up until the plug was pulled (usually for totally predictable braindead business reasons). I don't see that at Amazon, Google, Facebook, etc.
Granted, I'm on the outside looking in now - maybe those people exist there and are just overrun by Business Idiots.

Replying to @fionasboots@tech.lgbt
@fionasboots @eestileib this is a totally personal take and does not reflect any technical assessment of relative benefits... TBH I actively decided not to even look at Reticulum, because Meshcore and Meshtastic meet my personal needs for my personal use cases, and it's already disruptive enough to have two incompatible projects in the same space. I got started with Meshtastic because I heard about it first (as I suspect many do), and then our mutual aid group decided to standardize on Meshcore for our urban-area use cases. Which makes perfect sense, but now I spend a good portion of my Mesh-related time walking people through the transition (both the how and the why). There's always someone who says "well if you aren't friendly to Meshtastic then fuck you, I don't want to play with you" without bothering to understand the reasons we went with Meshcore - and tbh there are very active people in our Meshcore group who are too busy to give the explanations and just say "no Meshtastic, only Meshcore, because we said so" which doesn't help either. The last thing I want is to figure out how a third incompatible system fits into this already-overcrowded niche.

(I'm honestly curious, and giving you the benefit of the doubt that this wasn't just drive-by knee-jerk snark at the AI hashtag I included - but if I'm wrong about the latter, feel free to just ignore this. 🤷🏻‍♀️)

@jernej@androiddev.social good to know, thanks! I'll try that on a less-critical device and see if I can get it to work before I make changes to my daily driver. (Getting Syncthing working initially seemed super janky, and I'm scared that if I look at it funny, it'll fall over... And the USB port has crapped out on this phone, so syncthing is my only way to get data off now. Yes, I know, I need to replace it, but my foray into *that* is yielding a whole 'nother round of yak shaving, so I'm limping along.)

@marcotietz@infosec.exchange @wendynather@infosec.exchange @fuzzface@epsilon-ix.masto.host my second job out of college, I was briefly a NOC monkey for a small local ISP / colo that was *very* casual. We grew rapidly and eventually hired a facilities manager, who was decidedly not. One morning he called all of us onto the datacenter floor and was raising hell because he pulled a floor tile and found a sixpack... Wasn't going to let us off the hook until the culprit fessed up. Which is about when the CEO wandered in to see what the yelling was about - and said "oh, hey, thanks, I forgot which tile I put that under!" Facilities manager about had an aneurysm. (To this day I don't know whether it was actually his, or he was just bailing out the poor bastard who actually put it there. 😁 )

But I tidied it up yesterday - the only transient things I added today were the radios, so it hasn't yet reached its usual state of "six things reminding me to do something, three things I set down without thinking, one thing I need to bring downstairs, and a couple of things that I have no idea how they ended up there".

Does anyone here know how to get around the stupid fucking folder access restrictions in #Android ??!? I'm trying to use syncthing to back up my Download directory and getting "cannot use this folder" when I try to access Download. Rooted phone, running Syncthing as superuser, granted superuser permissions in Magisk. But apparently this is some OS-level bullshit... (It also says "to protect your privacy, choose another folder" which is fucking *rich* - as if Google was concerned about my actual privacy. Fuck off thataways.) #Comp

If you simply cut down a Paulownia, it will resprout from all of its root suckers, and they can extend up to 50ft away. ☹️ You need to kill the whole tree, including the root system, by making slashes in the bark and treating it with herbicide. I got around the Download restriction by using the built-in file manager app to move all the files out of download into a new download-sync directory, so at least I have them backed up now. Will definitely work on getting wireless ADB set up now that I have a complete backup and I'm less anxious about potential data loss. 😁
