Ok tech people. I need your help. I'm looking for a simple external hard drive for my Grandma. Nothing fancy, just plug in, store the files, safely eject. Nothing fancy, but we do want it to last a long while. My uncle told her something about vibrations ruining them over time, is this true? Throw me your reccomendations!

Coming to the #askfedi brains trust on this one. I've developed a booklet that teaches people how I write my poetry that I perform at poetry slams and other events. I want to sell it online. WHere and how would be the best place to do this? My thoughts are you buy it, get a download link or the file gets sent straight to your email. Any suggestions? Please repost for reach :)

My phone went dead
Should I charge it?
Mm, maybe not
Who would call?
I get excited over scam calls
Spam texts make me feel alive
At least somebody’s reaching out
Even if it’s all a lie
Everyone loves my apartment
Says I’m lucky, says I’ve made it
Funny how you can have everything
And still feel disconnected
I’m fine when I am busy
When there’s somewhere I should be
Give me gigs and give me deadlines
Give me people needing me
Cause when I’m left alone too long
My brain starts getting loud
Tells me I’m all potential
That never figured itself out
I keep showing up
Keep putting myself out there
Smile for photos
Fix my hair
Tell my friends “big things are coming”
Like if I say it, it comes true
But I’m so tired of pretending
That I know what I’m meant to do
I just wanna be useful
I just wanna matter too
What’s the point of all this trying
If nothing’s breaking through?
They say be around the people
That you wanna be like someday
But how can I become somebody
When there’s no one here anyway?
I’m posting clips and writing captions
Selling dreams I barely feel
Making art about survival
While I’m not sure this life feels real
Family calls with bad news
I say “I’m fine,” I play my part
Everybody needs something from me
When I’m falling apart
And I hate how jealous I get
Watching people move ahead
Engagements, babies, careers
While I can barely leave my bed
If I disappeared tomorrow
Would they miss me or my work?
Would they repost old poems
Talk about how much I hurt?
Would they say I had such promise?
That I lit up every room?
Funny how flowers get delivered
When there’s no one left to give them to
I just wanna be useful
I just wanna feel needed
Cause breathing gets exhausting
When your life feels repeated
They say everything takes time
Maybe mine got lost somewhere
I keep showing up to life
And life acts like I’m not there
My phone went dead
Should I charge it?
What for?

Dry leaves scrape along the path,
your name, almost, then gone.
Heat sits in the dirt, unmoving,
a version of me that thought staying meant something.
A magpie watches from the fence,
the last time I felt certain slips out of reach.
The river moves past rock without pause,
all the waiting I mistook for patience.
Wind lifts the branches, lets them fall,
something in me still doesn’t know when to leave.

People of mastodon who do video editing. I have a problem. I recorded an amazing, very natural take of a poem this afternoon. It's the best take we got, but there's a little boy who appears in the video for a few seconds. I'm not comfortable using his image, because he's a stranger, because of the material and the poem, and I'm not about putting random stranger's faces on the internet without their permission. Any ideas on what I can do? Please repost for reach.

Fucking disgusting. Support workers now trying to add extra hours to support shifts to cover fuel costs, on top of the travels costs they are already paid per kilometre. NDIS says nope, I say nopoe and this woman is still insisting on the shift. Guess I'm doomed to another day at home today.

12 to 13 hours a day doom scrolling and watching reels on facebook
not getting to sleep until 2am
isolating myself in my apartment
telling people i’m not ok
being told to keep my chin up
how the fuck am I supposed to do that?
I write poetry to express my feelings, get told "that's really sad." But does anyone, anyone at all see the deeper fucking meaning? So this is me, keeping my fucking chin up I guess.

I stand in the doorway between my bedroom and my bathroom,
cold tile pressing up through my feet,
like the floor is asking,
are we doing this again?
It is a coin toss morning.
Go back to bed, or pretend I have somewhere to be.
Either way, the day is waiting.
Same apartment, same quiet,
same walls that know my name but never say it back.
I send messages.
Hello, just checking in.
Hello, just wondering.
Hello, do you need someone like me?
Send.
And watch them drift like paper boats on a river that never returns.
I look for work until the words blur together.
Experience required.
Drivers Licence REQUIRED.
Someone already moving.
I am here, refreshing a page,
like it might refresh me.
When I am not trying, I am still.
Which sounds peaceful
until stillness becomes a room with no door handles.
Unless I leave.
Unless there is an event, a stage,
a room full of strangers pretending not to be alone.
Then I borrow a version of myself,
one that speaks, one that lands,
one that lingers in other people after I am gone.
But mornings like this, there is no audience.
Just me,
and the spaces between bed, kitchen, and office,
and the question that keeps asking,
how many times can you start a day you do not want,
and still call it living?

I attended a poetry event at yet another inaccessible venue tonight. My support worker and I trekked up a flight of stairs with a break in the railing, stepped over cables running across the floor at the top, and navigated pillows scattered across the floor for extra seating in front of the performance area.
Every time I attend another of these events I feel it. Not even surprise anymore. Just that quiet, familiar “of course.”
Every time, I am more determined to create a space that is accessible and inclusive of all. Somewhere that support workers don’t have to plan our exits with as much concentration as completing puzzles. Somewhere you can just arrive and exist without having to fight the room first.
The biggest barrier right now is finding a venue.
And maybe that means I have to make some sacrifices. Maybe it means losing some of the crowd.
But I would rather build something smaller that actually includes people, than keep showing up to spaces that don’t.

HI #Blind folk of Mastodon.
I’ve been sharing a lot of my personal photos today, but I also have a bunch of things like memes and quotes. There’s a Facebook group called Memes and Jokes for Blind Folks where people post memes with image descriptions, and it got me thinking about posting similar content here. It would be on a separate account dedicated to that kind of thing, with image descriptions included. Is that something you’d enjoy seeing on Mastodon? Just to be clear, I’m not trying to take over what the group does on Facebook, and I’m definitely not trying to turn Mastodon into Facebook. I just thought it might be something people here would be interested in. I think it would be cool to take submissions too, however that sort of detail can be worked out later if this goes ahead.

Heyo. So I"ve really been struggling as of late. I need to change that. IF you use either TeamTalk or Discord, I'd love to talk. Part of my problem is that in living alone I spend so much time alone and I get in my head, which is really not good. So I"m trying to break that. I have a discord server, and a TeamTalk server, and it would be awesome to start hanging out with people. If you want the details, throw me a message.

I don't know how to tell people I"m not ok, and make them understand. Feels like I'm slowly slipping backwards. Loneliness is real. The isolation is starting to become real. I went to an event today that was advertised for meeting new people, but everyone there already knew each other. I was the loner sitting on the outskirts. Came home with nothing but sunburn...slept for 4 hours and now I"ll probably be awake until 2:00AM again. Yes, this is totally normal and healthy and fine, right? Right... Yeah not coping at the moment.

I am blown away by what music can do to a poem!
After talking with @FreakyFwoof@universeodon.com earlier, I crammed myself, a basket, a laptop and a microphone into my closet and recorded my poem The Stairs Inside me. I sent the audio to Andre. The final result once music and poem came together? This!

Borrowed versions.
I don’t know who I am.
Discovering myself shouldn’t be this hard.
People go through phases.
Trends. Styles. Realisations.
They try things on, discard them,
keep what fits
until something starts to feel like theirs.
They experiment.
Get it wrong.
Change their minds.
I don’t think I’ve had that.
Not really.
I don’t know what I like.
Not in that instinctive,
immediate way people talk about.
I don’t get to look at something and just know.
There’s no moment of that’s me.
Everything I understand about myself has come through someone else first.
“this suits you”
“that doesn’t”
“you’d never wear that”
I’ve built something out of it...
Or tried to.
I don’t know who I am.
I know how easily I’ve been defined.
Even in what others thought were jokes.
“Oh, Luna?
She’s not interested in boyfriends or girlfriends.
Significant others. Nope.
She’s asexual.”
Said like it was settled.
Like it didn’t need to come from me.
I laughed.
It’s easier to agree than to admit
I don’t know if that’s true.
Or if it’s just something that stuck just because.
sure, I’ve had partners.
sure, I’ve loved.
Even that feels uncertain.
Like I experienced it without fully knowing where I stood inside it.
I don’t know what I should be either.
Every version of me feels like something I’m borrowing.
Like a little girl standing in her mother’s clothes,
shoes too big,
fabric dragging behind her,
trying to walk like she belongs in them.
Trying to make it fit.
Like I’m assembling a person from scraps
and hoping no one notices the seams.
People say “just be yourself”
like that’s something you stumble into.
Like it isn’t something I’ve been trying to build
without ever knowing what it’s supposed to look like.
I don’t know who I am.
Maybe, that’s not a phase.
Maybe, it’s just me.

I reached for a sound today,
And found silence waiting for me.
Funny how silence can feel so loud,
The world keeps moving in bright colours,
Laughter spilling out of doorways,
Voices weaving themselves into belonging,
Names spoken easily,
Hands finding hands without searching.
And somewhere, just outside the circle,
A quiet space remains.
Time is a strange collector,
It lets you keep the weight of things,
but steals their edges.
A voice becomes an echo,
A moment becomes a shadow,
A name becomes a feeling you can't quite hold,
only recognise when it passes through you.
Sometimes I wonder, where forgotten sounds go.
Do they dissolve into the air?
Do they settle into walls?
Do they drift somewhere soft, distant,
Waiting for someone who remembers how to listen.
If a memory fades gently enough,
Does it disappear,
Or does it change shape?
And if no one calls you back,
do you become quieter,
or just harder to hear?

While so many things are uncertain at the moment, I do know there are a few things I am absolutely certain are true.
1. That I love @ky0les@fwoof.space to the moon and back, which is a whole lot of love.

3. That it's Monday! Which of course means it's time for the #MondayRandom10 which is one of the best parts of my week.

There are stairs inside me that don’t lead anywhere good.
They go up into locked rooms.
They go down into basements that smell like mould and old apologies.
Every step is narrow.
Every step is sharp.
I learned early how to climb without crying.
How to keep quiet when the wood bit back.
Some nights I swear
I can still hear myself falling—
that hollow thud of bone on timber,
the way shame echoes longer than pain.
I kept climbing anyway.
Not because I’m brave.
Because there was nowhere else to go.
Soil is not soft.
It is not romantic.
It is a mouth.
It opens.
It takes.
It keeps.
I have knelt in it long enough
to mistake it for prayer.
Pressed parts of myself down into the dark—
the need,
the anger,
the version of me that wanted too much.
Covered her with both hands.
Said, this is safer.
Said, rot quietly.
But soil doesn’t let things stay dead.
It swells with what you hide.
Feeds on it.
Pushes it back up, warped and wrong.
Every time I tried to disappear,
something grew teeth.
And the thing I don’t regret?
It isn’t pretty.
I don’t regret loving in ways that gutted me.
I don’t regret staying until I was unrecognisable.
I don’t regret clawing my way up those stairs
even when I hoped I’d slip.
The truth?
I don’t regret surviving.
Even when survival was ugly.
Even when it made me hard.
Even when I became the kind of person
people don’t swipe right on.
I chose the bruise.
I chose the dirt.
I chose to keep breathing
when it would’ve been easier not to.
The stairs still splinter.
The soil still waits.
But I am the thing
that came back wrong
and came back anyway.
And I don’t regret that.

Australia is trialling a new national emergency alert system that can send loud alerts to phones during serious events, even if the phone is locked, on do-not-disturb or on silent. If you keep a spare or private phone for safety, privacy, or personal reasons, it might be worth making sure it’s completely powered off while the tests are happening — not just on silent or airplane mode.
A small check could make a difference. Take care 🤍 👇

How does this work, you ask? Take your prefered music listening app, folder or drive (If you're still using CD's or tapes or records that's ok too.) Shuffle your collection and give us any lyric from the first song to show up. You can tell us what song the lyric is from, or leave us guessing. When you post, don't forget the #1LyricMonday hashtag. Happy posting! TO start us off, this is mine.
