@indirect@fiasco.social I had anticipated something going wrong with my dynamic DNS cron job, so I left the machine open to a terminal with the command to fix it all queued up so you could just press enter I did not anticipate massive power failure!

I've been using this home server setup since 2018 (albeit only for SSH until 2022 or so) and it has never happened *once* before that it's gone down so hard that it required manual intervention to bring back up just figures that it would happen to hit when I'm on the other side of the world!

of course, I couldn't do anything even if I was home, because the power is out

so first gotta wait for the crews to restore power

then gotta wait for my cron job to update dynamic dns

@srol@mellified.men the best thing I can say about season 2 is that for a couple episodes it had ICE as the primary antagonist; the acab part was cool

I think most of the praise season 3 got was relative to the first two seasons, and if it had opened with season 3 it would have gotten a pretty lukewarm reception; it's the kind of thing I would watch on a plane if there weren't any movies I wanted to see

@james@scl.csns.xyz what kind of search? I know that there's currently a missing feature where hashtag search will only return contents from the local server itself; hashtags indexing remote contents is on the roadmap if it's posts or accounts, maybe that's a different issue

@gigatexal@mastodon.social mine cost $0 because I'm running it off an old laptop on my home network I understand it's not an option for everyone because residential ISPs tend to be horrid, but even a $5/mo VPS is plenty for GtS

@tijs@social.lol @designbyadrian@indieweb.social it's hard to get the real numbers, but some estimates have been that the number of users has grown by 8x in the past week, and twitter hasn't even fully collapsed yet; one server reported the number of posts exchanged went up 20x in the past month the bigger servers we have today can't keep up and badly need people on them to move off to less overloaded places, and that's just the growth that's come so far imagine what will happen when twitter actually does finally stop working; there's no way we'll be able to keep up with the wave without adding more capacity

@vtmicah@vmst.io there's actually no built-in web UI other than for config setup I use https://pinafore.social (I use this for mastodon too; it's great) the GtS app implements the same API as mastodon so mobile apps like Tusky work with it despite being designed for masto. I've never used iOS so I can't offer a recommendation there, but whatever you use for masto should work for this too, other than known client incompatibilities tracked here: https://github.com/superseriousbusiness/gotosocial/projects/5

on the other hand it's fairly new so some features are missing. video is not yet supported, and posts with videos will currently just have them stripped out, though there's a draft fix for this. (this is a bummer because while GtS supports gifs just fine, mastodon doesn't, and will convert uploaded gifs into videos) the other one I just learned is that there's no features for reporting abusive accounts. this means you may want to keep your servers smaller and invite-only. luckily being easy to set up means having more smaller servers is easier

one of my favorite things about GoToSocial is that it's so easy to set up:

download+untar release
edit config file to set domain name, set DB to sqlite
run admin account add
set up DNS
run server start in tmux (you can move it to systemd or whatever later if you want but it's not strictly needed)

you can run it inside docker and a lot of people do, but IMO that's just extraneous overhead that doesn't buy you much, because it's already self-contained without external dependencies

@redlegoman@117net.co.uk sure; I mean if you're already familiar with the stack and have the beefy hardware to support it, I'm all for people installing masto; I'm just glad there's an alternative for other people like me I already have to use docker at work so the idea of using it for my unpaid projects isn't very appealing tmux isn't really anything like docker, no the web GUI for GtS is provided by https://pinafore.social which I've been using even for my main masto account for years because it's much faster and more accessible than the masto frontend

if you're a new arrival who's created an account on someone else's server but you have the technical skills to run your own, please consider giving it a try!

folks with experience running rails might try installing Mastodon, but for others who want something simpler, I've been running a GotoSocial server at hey.hagelb.org for the past few months, and it's pretty easy to install/operate
