I know tmux, I use it all the time to make sure my sessions at work don't get lost when the vpn goes down, but I meant having to run a service inside a disconnected tmux session is a tad like running in a container. anyway this is all the fun of the open source world I guess, there are a minion ways tondo everything and we can pick the ways we like!

@technomancy@icosahedron.website oh ok, I find docker to be way easier with this kind of thing. no need to worry about dependencies and having the right versions of everything. they're all rolled up in the docker image. and the docker setup wizard thingummy for mastodon creates an admin account for you too. and running it inside tmux? that's a bit like running a docker container too. as it's just activitypub, does that mean there's no web gui?

@technomancy@icosahedron.website maybe so, but I already had most of the infrastructure at home already so it was literally just running the docker-compose stuff and tweaking nginx. I'm pretty sure it would be just as easy on a vps with any provider too. the link you shared though, how would I use that to set up my own instance? (every day is a school day) the gotosocial.org main page is pretty sparse, and I'm clearly being an idiot and missing some step
