@dannypsnl@g0v.social From , this one was close in spirit to the result https://fluxbox.org/screenshots/ #fluxbox I don't know how the project is going though. Years I no longer use it. But if use linux the way I do, it's probably thanks to this project.

@dannypsnl@g0v.social I try to remember but I would not say it was super modular in the SmallTalk language mindset. I just scratched the surface. I think it was in bare C language. I could not talk about the inner design. I think I only looked at the code for keyboard shortcuts: but even this left not much traces

@dannypsnl@g0v.social I'd say it was similar to xmonad in spirit, but with instead 2 or 3 specialized DSL, for:

  • keyboard shortcuts
  • menus
  • windows
  • workspaces

I can't remember others. I'd say there were 4 parts in the configuration.

And you'd plug things for access bar. But with time I even dropped the access bar ;-) Then I went for xmonad, which I really liked. Both #fluxbox and #xmonad made me adopt a workspace+terminal centered workflow. Now that I have the habit, the default gnome install suffice me. But it was forged in fluxbox/xmonad daily practice.

It is important for me: it's mostly because of the perfect aesthetics that I switched to Linux entirely -> I could have MY OWN totally my OWN desktop

This after a 100th windows update failing in the middle and n-th time leaving my system broken: the time too much -> not wanting to reinstall everything

The user screen desktop that made me choose fluxbox/openbox was based on this: with menu and buttons in the same shade

I worked facing a zen ocean with transparent terminals

The contrast with Microsoft VIsual Studio is without comparison possible

@krutonium@social.treehouse.systems It was no critics at all. If I forward, it's because I think it may be useful and I also liked the idea. Made me think I would do a similar trick using nix / nix-shell -p for stuffs to do once in a while without worrying about having them on my configuration: but as scripts of course ;-)

RE: @krutonium@social.treehouse.systems

Not a critic.

I just remarked, seeing this post, that it is been years I no longer use any desktop short cut. Not a single one.

I think it started with fluxbox, then xmonad, and I have kept the habit on gnome.

I prefer have a terminal centered workflow. And multitude of adapted pre-mashed terminal environements. Even if it launches a GUI in the end.

I find desktop shortcuts super messy.

And it alters the beauty of my desktop background images: it was probably the first reason I started this with #fluxbox

@pigworker The problem, if that's the definitions, the real way of seeing... Then it's the definitions of the definitions that is the real way of seeing things And if it's the universe of definitions of definitions that are the real definitions: I suspect that might lead super far. (Far from an expert in Type Theory: that is my current understanding)

I have adopted #nixos some years ago

Today I have typed in my CLI: guix --version

guix (GNU Guix) 1.4.0-unstable-2025-06-24
Copyright (C) 2025 the Guix authors
License GPLv3+: GNU GPL version 3 or later <http://gnu.org/licenses/gpl.html>

I gonna to try using it regularly, for ad-hoc local stores.
It seem to install its store not in /nix/store, but /gnu/store. I like the fact it is separated.

And it is in #guile : as my LISP progress is too slow... I think I am going to force myself to try to make something interesting with #guix

A sort of local store (not really, because stuffs would go in /gnu/store)... for some of my developement projects

let's see if that takes form

I had some ideas, which I have not yet totally achieved

I wanted to think up something based on the guarantee that you can explain something, a term: not really like a domain of expertise...

rather in terms of being able to explain to someone else, be it at the same level or a less advanced level

Not a 100% guarantee without error... But like a bag of terms, and concepts, and relations someone is at ease with... that someone guarantees:

    1. to be able to talk about
    1. to detect false things on the subject.

It's no longer a question of title, phD, career or else...

It could avoid issues like a pair of experts in Petrology Geology publishing a few paper denying Climate Change, then they create the "Syposium of the Consensus that everyone agrees Petrology Geologist understand Climate more than Climatologist" <- true fact, I just changed the name #agnotology

I think it is related: playing with knowledge that is a little too far from one's zone of expertise (as an Engineer that's what I do every day wrt Science)

If you have feed back on the idea, don't hesitate

@realn2s @beyondmachines1 @spottyfox Claudius, I could not help it. I have translated your message in C++ ISO Norm Language "It is acknowledged that the circumstances under which undefined behavior may arise are, in fact, specified by the governing standard. Consequently, and notwithstanding the designation “undefined,” such behavior may be regarded as being defined insofar as the conditions of its occurrence are concerned, even though the resulting effects remain without prescribed semantics. The author further notes, based on experience accumulated over multiple decades of practical engagement with the C and C++ programming languages, an empathetic understanding of the difficulties and frustrations associated with such behavior." google-translate English -> C++ ISO Norm Language
