@olasd alright, just when I had started using uv ... not yet added as a dev dependency however. The thing is, Python is completely and utterly lost in the big AI battle. CPython has already accepted agent based contributions iirc. It's not surprising if we look at how instrumental Python libraries were for the early wave of the current LLM shitstorm. It's plainly sad in a way.

@joeroe@archaeo.social @nfrerebeau@archaeo.social the problem I see with with radiocarbon in particular is that it goes from ~53.000 years BP to the present, and post-bomb calibration treats years as decimal numbers. So "deep" is important but doesn't cover the whole range. It would require a collaborative effort of some sort ...

@joeroe@archaeo.social its telling that you had to write it yourself (I can't remember if it's needed for other packages you've written like stratigraph) and there's nothing else doing this thing. Do you know how it's treated in rcarbon? I have this idea that radiocarbon and dendrochronology libraries should have a common set of calendars, like the era package for R.

As far as I can understand, dendrochronology libraries like dplPy https://opendendro.org/python/ treat years as simple integers, even if they're working with pandas DataFrames. This is quite frustrating.

I'm looking at cftime https://unidata.github.io/cftime/ and I was hoping to find some ready-to-use calendar that's fit for palaeoclimate (going back thousands of years, millions of years, and so on). But I can't seem to find anything useful that would help #IOSAcal improve in that regard (currently years BP are treated as integers)
