@randahl@mastodon.social I'm not saying they would, of course, but it's interesting to think about how Ireland is within range of the Flamingo missiles that Ukraine has been using to knock out war-supporting industrial facilities in Russia. And also worth mention are the long range drones that have been disrupting Russia's shipping in the Baltic Sea. Even while fighting for their right to exist, Ukraine shows a lot of restraint.

If you want an idea of how the economy's doing, my wife and are going out to dinner to celebrate that we got cold feet at the same time and decided NOT to buy a house. Even though we found one that we really like and ostensibly could afford.

Everything that's going on in the world makes it feel too risky to gamble our life savings when it feels like a major collapse is right around the corner.

So I set up a XMPP server in my homelab this weekend to see how the ecosystem has evolved since the last time I used it. Only took me a few hours.

It seems like it has pretty much everything we'd expect from IM these days? E2EE with forward secrecy, group chats, message archives, reactions, file uploads, audio messages, voice and video calling, location sharing, etc. etc. It's even federated!

Why are we sleeping on this tech? Is there some unmitigated downside I haven't discovered yet?

As their own page says, they haven't made a formal release yet, but I'll consider switching to it from keepassxc when they do. I acknowledge that this does not fall into the definition of "better" for a lot of people, though.

A fascinating thing about being on the inside of a software company that wanted to become "AI Native" is that I get to watch the bubble pop from the inside.

We're staring down the barrel of a 1000x price increase for the LLM cost of servicing this critical path workflow that we've had in production for 2 years. That's a napkin math estimate but even if I screwed it up, the smallest unit of capacity that the vendor will sell us is still 100x more than what we used to pay.

But I have observed this in my coworkers, especially the ones that are suddenly afraid to state an opinion or position without running it by Clod first. It actually does have a dark cyberpunk feel to it, like a cult of people who just want to be the mindless fleshy servants of the machine god, freed from having to do any meaningful cognition of their own.

@sysop408 @twipped all of these things are possible with existing hardware, computer science, and human interface concepts. But we absolutely do not need to stop research and improvement in any of those fields! Things can get so much better in software once we're not constrained by the VC mindset! Even a modest capitalist profit motive would produce much better software than what we have now. We don't even need a space communist post-scarcity utopia to make some really meaningful improvements.

It can be implemented in languages that fundamentally eliminate certain classes of security vulnerabilities. It can reliably provide a wide range of accessibility affordances. It can make all electronic communication secure and private. It can consume minimal resources, making it available to lower-income audiences on lower-powered devices.

The tools we use to make it have only very recently started to not completely suck. Very few developers are actually skilled in using these tools properly because there is an economic incentive to lower code quality even though this produces an incredible amount of waste over even the medium term.

Victoria is trying to become bikeable. It's fairly progressive, but it's expensive to live here. Victoria is also touristy so it's walkable, but the rest of the island is very car-centric. Victoria is pretty gay friendly.

He also says that the only time he's encountered overt homophobia is in Vancouver. He'd probably also try to stay out of the boonies; Nanaimo is "boonie-adjacent" apparently.

@twipped I do agree with a lot of the earlier parts of this comment but I think it failed to stick the landing on its conclusion. There is still an enormous amount of innovation space left in tech that would keep plenty of software developers occupied for decades. However, those innovations don't have a simple way to be exploited by venture capitalists and turned into a quick profit, therefore as far as ycombinator is concerned, they might as well not exist.

@sinbad yeah, the "nothing happened" results are a vestigial relic of D&D wargaming ancestry. But D&D's combat has evolved so far away from those roots that it would benefit from abandoning more of its wargaming mechanics. Hasbro's management of the IP is utterly uninterested in the details of things like mechanical consistency in their game though, so I think people are going to end up migrating to systems that better suit their tastes as D&D stagnates for a generation.
