I see the #fedi announcement by a commercial marketing agency of a venture capital based app store joining the fediverse.

Is the #fediverse we have capable of avoiding #enshittification as it grows and attracts an increasing number of corporations, who make it their market?

Is our #ActivityPub landscape resistant to corporate capture and eventual takeover and domination? Just like the Corporate Web, also decentralized.

There are nice niches on the web, like a bloggosphere, bulletin boards, and news readers, that all still exist. But web as a whole is predominantly corporate, arguably not commons based, for the people by the people.

Social experience design defines "commons based" as "where people are in control of their future on a path of healthy evolution and natural growth". A core principle is being sustainable at all times, and timely acknowledge and mitigate risks.

Is fediverse commons based? Did we cocreate the Future of Social networking?

"Can the commons expect something back from those who extract value?" is a key question of Social experience design. The answer forms one of 3 core principles: The Mindfulness principle.

No. You can't expect *anything* back. That philosophical insight is crucial to organizing a healthy commons that's able to retain its value and evolve.

Paint any principles and values on a flag but as long as the battle is scattered farmers holding feeble Copyright Law pitchforks against a vast drone army, its no use. Know thy enemy helps too. It's not proprietary code or corporations. It's hypercapitalism: The Rules of Battle.

The fair story for #SelfHosting is to go beyond the jubilation of only its merits in so many of the "Just Self-host" advice and instruction blogs that are doing the rounds, and also include all the considerations to perhaps not self-host. As it brings a much larger burden than just that initial install. Such that people are even burning out and leave the #FOSS space, having underestimated what it takes.

@ben@werd.social wrote a good article "Growing the open social web" for FediForum.

It poses this *essential* question: Why do we want to grow the open social web and for whom?

While the question is crucial when considering the future of social networking and the role of online technologies in society, it is not a question that is being addressed in any significant way. Our social web and fediverse "just happens", emerging from this chaotic cauldron of mostly technical discussions about which features to put in apps, how to connect one app to the next, and which social web technology or app is better than others.

Ben makes an appeal for creating good protocols, where the real value is, but only if we can share ownership of them. I 100% agree with the points in the article.

But how do we get there? What is this ownership? How do we achieve it, and subsequently retain it? I wrote down some some thoughts in a blog post.

Americans are feeling powerless to thwart the Trump administration’s assault on our nation’s values. Praised by tech CEOs, surrounded by sycophants, and enriched by his return to the White House, the president’s actions march on unchecked. Americans, however, have a powerful weapon that has been hiding in plain sight.

First, we must recognize that the president is unfazed by citizen outrage, the courts, or the media. He responds to one thing: the market. The most potent weapon to resist the administration is a targeted, month-long national economic strike — a coordinated campaign that attacks tech companies and firms enabling #ICE — to inflict maximum damage with minimal impact on consumers. In sum, the shortest path to change without hurting consumers is an economic strike targeted at the companies driving the markets and enabling our president.
