Ran a bit of a long term test with my VTR to see if it's stable and I was able to record around 17 minutes before it started losing sync again. Ugh…
So either the drum speed is slowly drifting as it warms up, or the camera frame rate is slowly drifting, or the load on the motor increases as we get towards the end of the tape, or it's something completely different…
I should probably repeat that test with a quartz locked camera to at least mostly rule that out as the source of the problem.

@Laberpferd I think they modulate the horizontal deflection voltage, or at least that's part of it. There is a potentiometer to adjust the keystone distortion but I'm not quite sure what exactly is going on.

@dtl I don't think so. It does get pretty bright, but turning up the brightness just washes out the image. I might do some basic reverse engineering to see if I can just drive the control grid a little harder maybe to push it deeper into cutoff for the black parts of the image

I made a quick little hack of my tinyvision library to output composite video so you can get an idea of the image quality. As expected from the weird geometry it's a little distorted, but overall not bad.
I had to add some resistors on the back to make the on-board brightness and contrast controls work cause I didn't wanna have to plug in external pots. It might be possible to get the geometry a little better by tweaking some more of the pots, but I have no idea what most of them do

Did you know that you can buy these funky little "flat" CRT displays on aliexpress for like 25 bucks? They run on 12V and take composite video input. Not sure what I'm gonna do with it yet but I'm tempted to create some kinda handheld game thing? Or a scientific calculator?
