@indyradio@kafeneio.social This time it did not involve a lot of tinkering, fortunately. The pictures are taken with a ZWO Seestar, which is basically the all in one package: it scans the sky, identifies where it's pointing, tracks the bodies and does a long duration photo stack. The optics are decent, but as with the microscope setup, it's pretty crazy what you can achieve with processing large image stacks.

So, while I am not a big fan of home automation, gadget automation is another thing entirely.

Yesterday night, both a telescope and a microscope were scanning and stacking, while I could catch a good night's sleep. Maybe I should look into mothing automation next 🤪

I may have gone slightly overboard with the #focusstacking, but it worked. Improved the lighting a bit, and returned the #frankenscope to the photo tent. Still more to be done. The long legs made me miss a few corners, so in the end that's ~250 stacks with a total of ~50000 captures, all for one #gnat. Might be a #mycomya from the antenna colours, tiger stripes and wing veination?

Unfortunately, the usually excellent book delivery service for the public libraries went bankrupt, so I cannot just order keys from the universities. Might be I will find a key online. As usual, I'd be happy for any id help, as far as that is possible from the pictures.

@fredrik Jeg synes egentlig kodebrikke er en relativt elegant løsning hvis man vil koble seg fra programvare. Når et krav til programvare er å ikke tillate tilgang til tredjeparter har jeg kanskje ikke tillit til de to store, men ikke spesielt bedre tillit til mine hjemmesnekrete konfigurasjoner.

@h03rnchen@sueden.social Meine Mutter hat ihren Honig dann immer in den Keller gestellt, bis er kristallisiert, weil das für sie ein Gütemerkmal war... 🫠 Vielleicht hilft ja auch ein kleines Schild im Dorfladen: "Echter Honig setzt sich!" - Natürlich nicht gelogen, aber genau wie Säfte "naturtrüb" oder mit Bodensatz als Qualitätsmerkmal vertrieben werden. Und ein kleiner Hinweis, wie man damit umgehen kann.

@pkviatko@ecoevo.social Seems to be symmetrical, so not a mite. Those are regular macro shots of both sides. Edit: I checked with the keys, and several do mention pairwise occelli adjoined to the eyes. I uploaded to https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/344486589 for now until I have time for a proper id. Does not seem to be M. ornata unless there is some dimorphism? The lighting could be better, especially for the wing pattern and terminalia. I currently removed most of the light box to have access to automate, that's the next thing to restore.

@pkviatko@ecoevo.social Not yet. Currently it is the calibration gnat that was first to land in my red/yellow pan trap. Southern Norway, mid march, right after snow melt. I'll hopefully have a full picture soon, and when it is off calibration duty, I'll try to record any relevant features that are not visible in the panorama. Checking the other side of the slide should be easy enough without manipulation. What would be candidates? My first thoughts were a collapsed ocellus or a small mite, but I wouldn't expect them in this location.

This is why I love #focusstacking. Look at the wrinkles on the neck of that gnat. The hairy compound eyes. The little ..erm... grey...thingy next to it. Anyone good with gnat anatomy? #setzkasten

I think I fixed the focus runoff issues on the #frankenscope, and if nothing else interrupts the current run, that's a 12x16 grid being captured in 130 layers at 80x magnification.

Things that are surprisingly easy to explain: gradients and the sobel operator. Not so intuitive: dot and cross products. In other words, there is now some terrain shading. I still kind of like the voxel-ish 2d look - porting the terrain to Babylon.js or PIXI seems totally feasible and the smart thing to do. A video from the gameplay so far. Yes, there's a treasure marked by the X on the other end of the map. Happy with the wind and steering mechanics. Realistic, a bit arcade style exaggerated, tough but playable. Takeoffs are possible if ugly, landings are... not so soft. The terrain rendering - currently all 2D sprites - is hitting some limits on mobile, so I probably have to look into some of the accelerated libraries. Currently I'm taking shortcuts and scaling down FOV when that happens, because we want to focus on the fun parts. Refactoring is for when the kids are sleeping... We're thinking of adding badges for achievements and sightseeing goals. So, recently, when my kids again asked about "learning to program", we came across the amazing #microstudio IDE¹. You develop your games online, collaboratively, in Microstudio script (or Lua or Python), and it can export to web, desktop or mobile.

They were familiar with #Scratch, but the next step into using actual code - syntax errors on top of the logic errors - is always daunting.

So, after a few experimental projects in different directions, and building on the microstudio jump & run examples, we decided to join this month's #FediJam (#FediJam3) and hoist the sails.. ⛵

We're now one week in. It's been a fun venture into not only programming, but also managing expectations, focusing on a game mechanic and essentially what the player sees. Not too heavy on the programming for them (dealing with syntax errors is tough), but the collaborative IDE allows them to interactively change everything and discover the effects, and to contribute with game assets and see how they magically (cough) pop up in the game. Highly recommended!

So now we spend a good part of the weekends sitting around the family table, each on a laptop, cursing like pirates, tinkering and playtesting. Arrgh!
