I live in Seattle WA (USA) with my family and work in tech. I'm also disabled (mostly deaf & blind on one side). I ride the bus, walk or bike most of the time and I care a lot about our transportation system working for everyone. I spend a lot of my not-work time on local advocacy, family stuff, pottery and our unitarian universalist church. Pronouns: They/Them

Note: I have multiple accounts and not posting all topics from one account. This one is my more general account.

I assume at this point that hidden prompt injections are everywhere. Much like scam phone calls or emails, you only need a tiny percentage of “wins” to make it worth the effort.

@ai6yr@m.ai6yr.org @Doctor_J_@mastodon.social We got a single “burner” induction unit 16 years ago and it became our primary “burner” and that was before induction got popular or common! We did finally get an induction stove top ~4 years ago and the plug-in got passed to a friend who used it a ton (yes it lasted that long! it was only like $100 in 2010!) Highly recommended as a way to try induction out without committing and the new single units these days have far better controls than our old one has.

Every time someone suggests a Claude “plugin” or “skill” is useful and then I go look at it and it’s just a pile of Markdown files. Markdown files are just a bunch of english language prompts pleading with the LLM to follow some sequence of steps (IMPORTANT DO THIS ONE FIRST, etc.) which it cannot do with any certainty, even if you include examples of code to run (why are you letting it run with your privileges?). I do not understand why anyone likes this.

@aaronb@social.ridetrans.it I hadn’t really heard of it before but would have assumed something that starts with ‘V’ but rhymes with Fox Hall. Which makes the Russian / Ukrainian make sense. Vowels are squishy so ‘a’ vs ‘o’ sound is pretty normal plus a ks-h sequence makes sense to turn into k-z.

TIL that the Ukrainian word for train station – вокзал – unsurprisingly comes from Russian but the etymology is very surprising.

https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/%D0%B2%D0%BE%D0%BA%D0%B7%D0%B0%D0%BB#Etymology

see also: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pavlovsk,_Saint_Petersburg#After_Paul_I

tl;dr: the first train line in Russia had a fancy station with gardens and music venues and such around it which got dubbed Vauxhall after Vauxhall Gardens, a public park in London, so that just became the word for train station. The Russian word then was borrowed into a wide variety of other languages.

Used Claude Code [1] today for a fix in a Java spring service. I haven’t done Java in a while but patterns are familiar and Claude is pretty ‘good’ at churning out fairly rote iterative improvements on existing code bases. I am again reminded that Claude and similar tools for dev stuff are so “magic” partly because we’ve built absurdly verbose and painfully designed platforms.

[1] my employe basically mandates learning gen AI tools & current client team I’m on uses it extensively.

Current new vocab item for learning Ukrainian is філіжанка largely because the etymology is delightful and is a good reminder that we are all connected. Also it’s fun to pronunce. https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/%D1%84%D1%96%D0%BB%D1%96%D0%B6%D0%B0%D0%BD%D0%BA%D0%B0#Ukrainian

@fluffy Oh yeah license does not necessarily matter. Our back house build was a licensed, very well known general contractor and all their subs too and recommended by our architect even. They cut sooo many corners, started work late, didn't pull permits, get inspectors out, or buy materials at the right time (or tell us if we needed to) resulting in all kinds of delay and rework. It was so stressful.

@fluffy So def a company flying outside the rules which is probably fine for a lot of small jobs and I get why a person might start a biz without. But once you get to stuff that is structural (the fix for the problem found needed lifting the corner of the house slightly!), I am going to want someone licensed & bonded, etc.

@fluffy One contractor we started working with on a porch fix for what we thought was a very small task and they "discovered" bigger issues and then tried to hard sell us on a very $$$ add to the work. Partner asked for their state license number, get a full contract, etc. and then suddenly they couldn't find it and so we cancelled work part way. Got someone else (properly licensed!) to do it for 1/5 the price (issues were real it turns out!)

Very sincerely, I believe that until we have ubiquitous and free toilet facilities everywhere (that do not require begging security or staff at a business), it is unjust that it is illegal to drop your pants, go on the street, and scoop up whatever can be scooped, as we allow for dogs.

@cwebber@social.coop I calculated how much my current work context will let me spend per day on an LLM cosing focused tool and it's $75,000 (USD) if I used it everyday to full capacity for 50 five day work weeks a year. I hazard to guess that is more income than likely 90% or more of households world wide. All so I can push out features slightly faster (maybe). I can't answer the why but it is wrong and obscene. Never mind all the other many concerns with LLMs.

Pronouns: They/Them Note: I have multiple accounts and not posting all topics from one account. This one is my more general account.

@cwebber@social.coop Extra painful: bigger tech companies can afford to pay for plans that limit use of context data to train future versions of an LLM service's models so THEIR work is "protected" while their employees consume the commons. But smaller companies and individual users will be giving up their data.

@kissane I have had to fight (gently) throughout my career to argue that documentation that becomes incorrect / outdated is better than NONE because at least that tells future people what we THOUGHT about how code/systems should work or what we planned to do which means future-us can reconstruct past shared mental models to some degree of accuracy, and thus resist loss of knowledge over time (due to attrition, etc.)

@kissane I have been thinking a LOT about how we only really “know” things in groups via how we build and maintain shared understandings. This is largely because I found out that Peter Naur (yes THAT Naur) wrote an article in like 1984 (https://pages.cs.wisc.edu/~remzi/Naur.pdf) that helped me define a frame about my impulses towards documentation and being thoughtful to future team members (including oneself). So kind of intense to see it expanded to EVERYTHING & being internally screaming YES YES OMG.

@glyph@mastodon.social @mcc@mastodon.social @0xabad1dea@infosec.exchange (I guess the cost of scraping for data extremely inefficiently is a rounding error next to cost of GPUs to train & retrain models but it indicates they aren't even trying to minimize costs.)

@glyph@mastodon.social @mcc@mastodon.social @0xabad1dea@infosec.exchange they can't possibly be making money. I started blocking basically every bot I could after I noticed llm scraping bots were like 99.9% of my blog site traffic. My blog is nothing. It gets a new post every 6 months maybe. Some single scrapers were hitting it dozens of time per day, hour or minute. That costs a lot if doing that for every domain, most of which don't change content daily. google's "regular" web scraper doesn't crawl that frequently!

@dylanw@xoxo.zone $12-14m with matching funds from housing consortiums etc could fund supportive housing for a 100-200 depending on the city. A lot of suffering to be ameliorated there.
