You appreciate really quickly why we added layers of abstractions. It's hard to appreciate these days how revolutionary COBOL and Fortran were when they came out and the opportunities it unlocked. But over time something was also lost.
Like... I love working with serverless and lowcode and not having to think about the platform as much but I also worry about what gets taken for granted to make that all work and the amount of underlying infrastructure needed. And sometimes the most correct solution is a very small executable with minimal resource requirements that does small number of things, reliably, very well.
