@azonenberg @0xabad1dea yeah, just turned mine on. Came back from the supermarket here in Leiden (>100km away from the fire) and my clothes had to go in the laundry bc they smell like campfire now. This is a new experience here, don’t envy you for having to deal with this each year.

Spent some time this monday preparing the machine including installing 2.11BSD to the M2322 hard drive, as my DIY disk emulator showed some reliability issues at #why2025 . I'm still in the process of applying the latest updates to the system, as rebuilding kernels and part of the userland on a 1MB RAM, less than 1 MIPS system takes a fair bit of time. Once I'm done updating the system, it will be at patch level 499 - the latest available for #211bsd , released on January 14th 2026! RevSpace, the hackerspace I'm a regular at, will have it's open day next saturday. I will be exhibiting my PDP-11/84 and possibly work on some other retro hardware as part of this.

Perhaps I'll attempt to repair my 11/44, or show off the VAX-11/750 I keep around there.

The past month I’ve been part of an assembly on use of “AI” in assessment and education at my university.

What surprised me was how many of of the students and younger faculty there (PhDs etc) were skeptical as hell about AI, while many lecturers and professors saw all kinds of opportunities to outsource their work.

Why is the frame always “students all use AI and academia needs to change” when the actual students beg for ways to preserve the status quo? (e.g. make AI use harder by doing more stuff offline, but keeping writing assignments etc)

@bert_hubert@mastodon.nl Niet 100% gerelateerd, maar ben je bekend met de CERN steun voor KiCad een aantal jaar geleden? Dat is een goed tegenvoorbeeld voor het “de software is er niet” argument: CERN constanteerde dat er nog geen voldoende goede opensource oplossing was en besloot donaties en mankracht te leveren om dat op te lossen. Zo kan het ook, niet klagen en onmogelijkheden verzinnen maar relatief goedkoop het probleem zelf oplossen (een handjevol programmeurs is veel goedkoper dan de gemiddelde commerciele aanbesteding)

Due to uni workload i’d completely missed it but seems like GPIB support made it into linux last december! I think I might have got the ball rolling on this back in ‘24 when I ran into gregkh at @revspace@hsnl.social and asked him if it would be possible to upstream linux gpib. A few months later he CCed me on the first commits to staging to let me things were happening :)

I do feel somewhat bad about being too busy to help out with the actual work, so lots of thanks to the people who made it happen!

If the transport works out I'll be bringing a PDP-11/84 to #WHY2025 . Plan is to have it be accessible from the net via telnet, ftp, etc... but there will also be ~16 direct TTY connections available, as well as dial up access via @eloy@hsnl.social 's infra if everything works out.
