@whitequark @letsbeworms to me, saying "disaster victims deserved to live" isn't supposed to undie them, but rather to help support the spirits of those grieving, and strengthen community more broadly. its value isn't in "i wanted them to live, but couldn't do anything to make that happen", but rather "you're not alone in thinking that was tragic and unfair"

@whitequark @letsbeworms and that's fair. in my view that's the value you're leaning on to find support for your own cause. but your own cause is there regardless of external support. it may not always be able to make progress, or feel particularly strong, but it's there. at least i hope it is. i think you deserve it.

@ignaloidas @whitequark i think that's part of the line that for me separates friends from strangers, and family from distant relatives (taking things like individual means to help into account, of course) but to me, the sayings quoted at the top refer more to how one perceives their own existence and moral value

@coreyspowell Not that long of an exposure, as far as astrophotography goes anyway - just 1/4 s. The amount of light captured is thanks to the wide open aperture (f/4), which also made details blurry, and the insanely high sensitivity setting (ISO 51200), which put a ton of noise over the whole image, and made a lot of stars indistinguishable from aberrant pixels :( as a photography nerd this makes me a little bit sad, especially since the settings were manual

@AmyZenunim 3 is what doesn't really happen. People who are savvy enough to have a fedi account (be it Mastodon or something else) already are already weighing things like terrible/nonexistent moderation, ads, data collection, etc. that happen to them on big tech social media and don't happen on Mastodon. Others either don't care and never will, or can be encouraged to move to the good side of fedi - especially when a bunch of their slightly nerdier friends leave Threads behind.
