@doskel@masto.doskel.net The dual G5 was honestly one of the few with the prettiest insides. I still have mine in the lab even though the power supply died aeons ago. I should look into replacing it, even though it's kind of a boat anchor that consumes the electricity of a small village. When you max out the fans, the wind tunnel ramp up so much that you can actively place things on the front of the case and they stick, lol. Side panel is also of the "if you drop it the floor is what get hurts" variety. Thiccc

I really want to like HomeAssistant but their security approach is baffling. They insist haos doesn't need console security because it's inherently local, and then don't provide any support for tls on their web app at all, with a healthy vibe of "you only need TLS for the internet" alongside it. And then their only option is essentially "pay a sub to support the project and get a cloud proxy with SSL so you can access it remotely!"

I have a lot of opinions about this, turns out.

PyPI now rejects uploads of new files to existing packages after 14 days, which sure is an improvement, but I was sitting there wondering why these are mutable at all, and why not like, hours instead of two whole weeks.

Turns out: it's because the "legacy" (current) API does not support staging releases at all. I hope when the new one drops this can be improved.

A thing that bothers me in the "mozilla are doing things they (rightfully) should be criticized about" discourse is that it always comes with a huge serving of "This is why you shouldn't use Firefox". And like, realistically, use what? One of the proprietary closed source browsers? One of the arguably more evil webkit/spark/chromium re-skins? That one fork of firefox that depends on upstream? That one browser made by the worst person you know?

I'm realizing that No Man's Sky is actually a pretty good Couch Game, with a steam controller.

I hadn't finished the story in spite of over 160 hours in it, and it turns out that got genuinely good after Atlas Rises. This whole thing suffers from terraria syndrome, where there's now so much content I barely know how to start, so that'll be fun to return to.

I was thinking of Earthworm Jim on Genesis today. The cartoon art style was so uniquely endearing that it's one of the rare things where my Dad, who had zero interest in video games, sat down and watched me play as a kid, laughing uproariously at the sounds Jim made, and the way he moved. The way he used his own head as a whip, and just in general, his idle animation really got to him.

I didn't realize it at the time, but looking back, it really highlighted how unique the animations were.

@rnd@toot.cat It's really a bit of both -- I had early MP3 players, like, with compact flash cards holding maybe a dozen low bitrate songs at best, and also minidisc players, where the manual management was just part of it, much like burning CDs But then early iTunes really threw in the whole "what if it was just your whole library in there with nice tags and search and it would sync automatically to your giant roomy iPod?" and that was so convenient it made it hard to downgrade

I bought a cute MP3 player in an attempt to maybe return to owning my music collection and reduce dependency on stream services, and now that I'm trying to figure out how what kind of workflow makes the most sense for managing my music library and syncing it, I'm discovering the software landscape has been more or less stagnant since I last used something like that.

Are there any good multi platform solutions or should I just use mpd and rsync basically?

I would be less upset about Typer vendoring Click in 0.26.0 if they didn't rip out the entire part where they'd let you use Click objects directly to cover the massive gaps in their own API. If your codebase does that you're basically left to piss in the wind.

I understand the problem they are trying to fix, but they created a whole ass new problem instead.

I'm working on a reasonably complex Python project and have decided for the first time to consciously step away from systematic OOP and into the realm of somewhat-functional (but none of it is pure and it won't ever be). It's a comfortable hybrid for what I'm trying to make.

I haven't yet fully internalized my own conventions for it and keep doing inconsistent stuff that turns into bugs or "oh wait no that's garbage I shouldn't do that" moments, so i decided to just bap a document in the project root that outlines my vision for the Architecture of it, especially WHY I'm doing any of what i do in there.

While re-reading it, it occurred to me that this is the kind of shit a stupid LLM Agent would insist on making, and that made me sad.

I'm not going to like, not do it, or change the way I'd structure it, but the fact that I had the thought or concern at all is kind of miserable.

The weekend has been full of trying to catch up on sleep and failing due to having to give my cat medication and saline injections at set intervals, but on the huge upside, the old boy is doing super well, and starting to be a piece of shit again, which is all you can ask for in your beloved friend.

I'm glad to have him back home.

And by three evenings I really mean "I woke up at 3am and dicked with it until 5am because I couldn't sleep and I have lost control of my life" It was made fairly easy because I had the foresight to really carefully separate my areas of concern and the CLI and GUI just share the same common domain logic, so swapping out the UI component is more or less devoid of side effects. Good times.

You know, I might actually be decent at this TUI thing.

I spent over a week cobbling together a Qt GUI with Pyside6, QML and QtQuick, and while it was nice at first, I hit so much friction with the stupid toolkit, needing to wrangle my nice data classes back and forth with thin adapters to wrap thinly veiled C++ types and I hated it so much I ripped it all out in a blind rage, and returned to Textual, where this WIP UI for my new secret projet took shape in about 3 evenings, and looks absolutely banging.

SO Vet called with good news, I can go fetch my old cat boy from the animal hospital tonight, with some Stuff To Continue At Home, his numbers are good, and they feel secure enough to recommend it They want to see him again early next week though which is gonna be a nice logistics nightmare in terms of convincing him to get back in the carrier, but I'll cross that bridge when I get to it Apparently he's being a ball of stress which I get I mean, he doesn't like to be touched or handled, even less by people he doesn't love, and has been in an environment with no known safe spots to hide, so I'm just p. eager for him have his safe hiding spots back home so he can finally relax a little

So my cat's creatinine levels went down to 250 which is great and they're talking of sending him home on friday I might have to do some subcutaneous hydration at home for a while, but otherwise, it seems like my old boy pulled through. This is terrific news.

Went to visit my cat at the animal hospital today and they book you a private room and do stuff like this, which is super human and comforting.

It's a good place, honestly

He is NOT a super cuddly cat at the best of times, more of a "I will sit very close to you no matter where you are" guy, so after having been touched and picked up by a bunch of people he doesn't like very much, he was kind of full of anxiety, but he calmed down when I picked him up like I do whenever I show him stuff he's never seen around the house, like light switches.

He looks healthier, and has gained weight, which is pretty good. Vet said his Creatinine levels are dropping significantly, which is News of the Optimistic Kind. They're keeping him at least one more day.

So I spoke to the vet, and they did the ultrasound and it's all very Mid in terms of results. Basically he has a tiny kidney and a big one, so he has partial kidney failure, probably from birth. That's probably ok in the sense that he went 14 years with it, and many cats continue to cat just fine with that. The problem is now that there's a second thing on top, which they suspect is an infection. His pee is apparently super dilute so tests didn't reveal any markers for it, but the vet says this isn't atypical. So they're blasting him full of antibiotics and keeping him hydrated. They say he's not in pain, and just resting, and eating his food -- just not very fond of the environment. The issue is whether or not once the infection or whatnot clears, whether or not his good kidney will still be good enough to continue catting on.

So they called last night to tell me my old furry boy's blood test came back, and his counts of everything kidney adjacent are up, along white blood cells, so they suspect it could be an infection, but they won't know until they do the ultrasound - which is fully book through today as well, so they'll try to fit him in a cancellation, or charge me an emergency fee to do it between things or during breaks. They started him on antibiotics all the same just in case. So I'm just awaiting a phone call still. I did sleep a lot though, which is nice. Also apparently he is deeply stressed (as expected) but very calm and even nice to the vet techs, which is a surprise. He's usually fairly spicy and direct when it comes to telling you he doesn't like whatever it is you're doing.

They're keeping him overnight to do blood tests, fluids and tomorrow an echo and then I'll know more I guess. I don't really do the "plug the stuff you made" thing super aggressively, but it feels exceptionally relevant today:

If you're sitting there wrangling updates for your homelab or small to mid size network on debian or redhat likes, because of a certain CVE, and you wish there was a a way to simply get a view of the state of that across all your systems, in one place, you could give my tool a go. It has a nice UX and requires nothing except ssh.

@hongminhee For what it's worth, Mastodon at least as a platform encourages you to put them at the end, and even renders them in a neat visually distinct block if you do that, separate from the message. For what it's worth, dumping hashtags at the bottom is actually my preference, both when reading and when writing, and I find my communities that way just fine -- and I'd even go so far as to say that I personally even dislike inlined hashtags, as it makes the text difficult to read, and probably wreaks havoc on people with limited or no vision using screenreaders. This is of course, a preference, and not enforced by anyone (who matters), but I think it's wrong to think of it as the Lesser Fallback Option(tm).
