Today I helped a student migrate an older HP laptop to #LinuxMint as no more Windows updates were possible. The student's first reaction was: "Nice interface!" He has never worked with Linux before but figured it out in no time and was eagerly browsing for additional software. I highly recommend Mint (especially #Cinnamon) for first-time users coming from Microsoft. The web is full of great tutorials! https://www.linuxmint.com/

@stux@mstdn.social De voordeel van een constitutionele monarchie is wel dat tenminste één openbare positie niet afhankelijk is van dramatische verkiezingscampagnes (op social media). Dat kan — als het goed gaat — bijdragen aan een gevoel van samenhorigheid en ook een beetje rust geven. Ik ben Duits en heb dus zelfs geen koning(in), maar ik ben er ook niet tegen. Wat zeker beter kan is hoe #Koningsdag nu wordt gevierd: het gaat weinig om gemeenschap en veel om drinken.

Ik moest vandaag naar #Aken om een nieuwe Duitse passport aan te vragen. De hele stad was prima voorbereid op Nederlandse #Koningsdag vluchtelingen — maar ik heb er bijna geen Nederlanders gezien. De binnenstad was lekker rustig. Toch was het leuk dat de winkels allemaal zo veel moeite met de oranje ballonnetjes hebben gedaan. 🇩🇪 ❤️ 🇳🇱

Rutger Schurgers & I will present the #storytelling engine #StoryScript (based on JavaScript & TypeScript) at #dhbenelux26 in Maastricht. It was nice to give a mini lecture at our #BADigitalSociety Experience Day! The topic which I addressed were the (corroding) boundaries between politics and the tech economy. Why do democracies ideally need a separation of government and business? Why is this difficult in the case of Big Tech? And why do so many countries now aim for #digitalsovereignty? Going #OpenSource is not always possible, but we can also consider local proprietary IT solutions if we want to avoid the big players.

I think everyone in academic IT should read this. We need distributed infrastructure, indeed, last but not least for teaching! Students are often excluded from more sensitive internal university infrastructures, and our options to share executable code are still extremely limited. This results in complex registration procedures just to teach a class of undergraduates a bit of Python. This needs to change!

@rgaiacs Ohh, if there's any news on #JupyterLite, please share! I have tried to integrate it into one of my teaching repositories to allow my students to run simple Python code directly in their browsers, but my kernel (though visible) is constantly "inactive". Didn't have to fix this yet, so any new developments and best practices are definitely of interest! 😁

One task that staff & students outsource to #llmchatbots is transforming #BibTex from a publisher website or library catalogue into particular academic citation styles. To save resources, we can look into alternatives like Chris Proctor's pybtex-apa7-style #Python plugin for #APA7. I have adapted his plugin in a script with widgets for reuse in Colab:

Maybe this is of help to others. MLA & other citation styles have no pybtex plugins yet, but this may still change. 🤞🏼

I'm creating #syntheticdata for teaching in the social sciences & find that #SDG with LLMs isn't for my small-scale use. While there are workflows to combine LLMs & generate more credible output ( https://link.springer.com/chapter/10.1007/978-3-031-93418-6_9 ), general-purpose models often create results that are too diverse & reflexive, even when imitating oral communication. Such data reminds me of journalism scandals à la Stephen Glass. High-quality data in my case is more messy and dull. Just look at YouTube comment sections.

They can do this pretty independently but it is good if the organisation team encourages this and also consciously addresses those remote crowds. E.g. by offering special chats.
