Als iemand beweert dat Madagascar in de Atlantische Oceaan ligt, doe dan geen moeite hem of haar terecht te wijzen; de ligging van Madagascar zal er niet door veranderen. (J.A. Deelder)

@Nonya_Bidniss@infosec.exchange yes, loved that insightful reply by @marjolica@social.linux.pizza . Here in .nl by the way, health insurers have to pay the doctor or hospital directly and if it turns out something wasn’t covered, have to try and get the money back from the insured. Simple rule to turn that burden of evidence around. @kibcol1049@mstdn.social

@avuko@infosec.exchange @Nonilex@masto.ai I’m probably slightly older so I remember the Soviet Union being right next door and my grandparents fought in the war. So I do very much appreciate where we would have been without America (and Canada, Britain and other allies - where I grew up there’s a Canadian war cemetery in the woods).
But unfortunately the time has come to consign that to history as far as the US is concerned. The guy was elected twice, so this is no accident. There’ll be others.

@sinabhfuil@mastodon.ie @robertklaschka@mastodon.online @pluralistic@mamot.fr In the UK. They had a referendum on a really nice system with transferable votes, but it was lost badly.

@sinabhfuil@mastodon.ie @robertklaschka@mastodon.online @pluralistic@mamot.fr didn’t that dreaded coalition government propose a system like that, but it was voted down in a referendum? I found that amazing, voters rejected having far more power and freedom.

@sinabhfuil@mastodon.ie @robertklaschka@mastodon.online @pluralistic@mamot.fr Thing is, I just looked at the results, Labour+Greens got 35% while Reform got 26%. But due to the left splitting its votes, Reform won big. You’ve got to wonder if that’s wise.

@robertklaschka@mastodon.online @pluralistic@mamot.fr clearly you are not used to coalitions, the response to that happening one time in the UK, and involving, you know, compromises, was a thing to behold from across the North Sea where we've never had one-party rule

@jef I think he just really admires raw power and, as @Remittancegirl rightly said, is not bound by any loyalty. Not that I’m a psychologist in any way, but it’s just the simplest explanation for the fact that he seems to like a whole bunch of dictators.

@passenger @Remittancegirl very insightful - I would add to that mix that there is a weird tendency for dominant powers to feel like they’re being taken advantage of by others, merely through their existence as a smaller but independent out-group
