Still looking for a new #gamedev studio to call home. Worked professionally with Unreal for 10+ years and due to my solo projects am proficient in Unity & Godot. My heart is Game Design, my blood is code. Flexible work hours and rates. Interested? Ping me! Portfolio: https://8bit-memories.com #getfediHired #job

Logitech: "oh noes we dun wanna make replaceable mouse batteries for EU. these things can be volatile and have such fragile wires" Then just use AA(A) rechargeable batteries, you dense fucks. I already used those in my Game Boy in 1990.

#gamedev question: Do you know when you work on a new feature but you see like 7 ways to implement it but none of them seems "right" and they all have exclusive pros and cons attached to them and you hesitate cause all of them are a lot of work so you don't wanna commit? How do you deal with that or is it just me and I'm just uniquely bad at designing anything?

To my aging PC brother and sisters: Is my memory slowly failing me because I think "playing at 60 FPS" didn't hold significance before flat screen displays? I grew up in PAL country so consumer TVs were 50Hz, but I recall PC monitors being 72, 75, 85, 90Hz. I don't recall shooting for 60.

@StarkRG@myside-yourside.net It's also weird how when I load up Discord in my browser (granted, not a Chromium one), that memory usage is a lot better. Dunno why the app itself sucks so much.

I like how when you use the Discord "app", it will just sit there and continue to eat away at your RAM until it eventually - from what I can tell - notices that something is wrong, reloads itself and begins again. Discord is such jank garbage.

EDIT: I noticed it helps a lot if you are in as few servers as possible. So I assume it's the thing fetching updates but never freeing memory after doing so.

"Tech" isn't bad.
The "Tech industry" is.
"Gaming" isn't bad.
The "Gaming Industry" is.

See, soon as you add an "industry" to it, you run into problems. Mostly hyper capitalism and greed.

@yurisizov@mastodon.gamedev.place @bryce@mastodon.brycedixon.dev @tracefree@mastodon.gamedev.place Well, whatever option I pick, it doesn't have to be the cheapest, but it needs to be flexible enough to switch the image/text once the player changes their input device. Seamlessly. Maybe I'll ship around all these layers and layers of complexity and just don't add the input prompts into the text. Begins to sound like way more of a time sink (for me) than it's worth it.

@yurisizov@mastodon.gamedev.place Yeah images is what I'm looking for - but may not be enough. It's kinda complex as I generally try to show icons (i.e. a small image), but if there is an input outside any soft of expected range (like the 16th axis of a DirectInput Controller) it may show the thing as text inside a stylebox that emulates the look of the icon...

I.e. do I need some fancy logic that parses a string and spawn labels and input prompts in a flow-container or something? That's one way I could imagine this working. But this sounds like something that I discover years later that I made it 10 times more complicated than it needs to be.

#godotengine devs, I got a question:
So I made myself some nice input prompts that show icons/text based on the input device and mapping.

They live in a handy scene so I can make stuff like "Press [ESC] to open menu". But so I need "Label | InputPrompt | Label". Which is fine for simple prompts - but not very flexible.

What if I just wanna add these prompt to text dynamically aka "Press %input1 to do this and %input2 to do that"? I can never wrap my head around that. Any suggestions?

@YoSoyFreeman@mastodon.gamedev.place "specify a resolution for the 3D elements without affecting GUI." so like 3D resolution scale does it? :D Yeah yeah I know. Tho I didn't know content scale factor wouldn't only affect canvas elements. But makes sense. It is meant to keep things consistent - for a game that is. Then again that's all assuming leaving viewport width/height alone. Logistically my shitpost idea of mapping resslutions to 3D res scale seems the easiest idea.

@YoSoyFreeman@mastodon.gamedev.place But it's not like there aren't other options. a) there's a viewport width/height override. I've not tested that but maybe using that doesn't mess the UI scale b) You can make resolution by viewport width/height and have your design resolution stored as a const. Then from that, you can calculate the required content scale factor (by width, height or a ratio). c) Let players chose a resolution and behind the scenes it sets that as window size as well as a dynamic 3D resolution scale.

@YoSoyFreeman@mastodon.gamedev.place I get that. That's what concerns me also. On the other side: Godot has (as far as I know) no way of reading the resolutions supported by the driver and hence the display. I know SDL can do that - or could in the past - but I can't figure out how to access that in Godot. So the Window sizes my game has - all hardcoded. Useless. Dead weight. All I can do is communicate to the player why resolution scale solves the problem of "game doesn't run at required FPS" in a better way.

@YoSoyFreeman@mastodon.gamedev.place No that's fine, but that's how Godot chooses to work. I feel the docs are pretty precise in saying that viewport width/height isn't meant to represent the game resolution, but the - quote - "design size" of the game. I found it pretty alienating at first, too and there still SHOULD be a way to easily switch resolutions in case that is really desired, but if you don't want 1:1 pixel mapping, then resolution scaling DOES make more sense than enforcing some pre-made resolution.

@YoSoyFreeman@mastodon.gamedev.place I love the way Godot does it. You can just throw on fractional scaling and the size is always consistent - no matter the resolution. As things should be. And if you need to be pixel accurate while also pretending HD displays don't exist, you can do integer scaling.

But frankly, the ungrateful way of how some of the community acts doesn't surprise me. Neither does it surprise me that nobody so far seems to have taken offense with Blender also being sponsored by Meta. As if the money that came from that company was any cleaner.

It's amazing how Blender took a step back, thought about the feedback they received from the community, acted on it and a big chunk of the community went "nope, not good enough" and/or "your first mistake was irredeemable already".

It's like ... if I were in such a situation, my takeaway would now be: if the community takes offense in the future, I might as well ignore it cause reaching out won't change much.

I was *just* complaining that Arch wasn't running linux 7.0 yet and just a few hours later, they responded to my complaints. If just everyone would just listen to me all the time, the world would be a better place. Yes. Indeed.

Jesus, I wanna play that game. But the inevitable heart break this game surely leads up to will kill me.

@anthk@neopaquita.es Fair. We can always fix the results of taking choice away from the user by taking more choice away from the user. That's how Windows got so popular. Don't mind me - just being particularly jaded today.

@Cheeseness@mastodon.social My preferences also align with what was around when I was a kid. And funnily enough, that stuff is still around cause it didn't just randomly stop working. I take that to fuel my bias. And no, it's not sustainable where we are. Even with the EU forcing companies like Apple and Nintendo to make devices with replaceable batteries... that's just a start. Heck a storage medium I don't have to check every 5 years for data loss would be NICE. I'll take it in chunky size, too!

Man, technology was just so much more reliable, durable, sturdy and repairable a few decades back.

"oh but technology today is just so much more complex and miniaturized - so of course there are more failure points!"

you say that as if that makes it reasonable. It doesn't.

@fysx@mastodon.gamedev.place Hot take: Without money, fossil fuel wouldn't be an issue. We would have used it, sure, but without monetary incentives to tie people/countries to limited resources and no monetary barriers to explore more sustainable solutions - we'd be in the green by now.

Humans have this really weird thing where when they see something is bad, they wanna regulate it or even make it illegal.

Except money. The thing that globally causes most pain and trauma. We're all motivated to chase the addiction of getting more of it.
