Critique is not necessarily negative; it can also be a gentle refusal, a turning away from what exists, a longing, wishful thinking, a desire, and even a dream.

I am very pleased to share that Data Design + Art first public lecture will host none other than Catherine D'Ignazio.

Like for many others, Catherine D'Ignazios work, for example the seminal book «Data Feminism» (MIT Press 2020), co-authered with Lauren Klein, has been an invaluable inspiration to combine data work with questioning dominant power structures. It is a book that I, but also our students, keep coming back to time again and again.

«AI and Feminist Worldmaking in Technofascist Times»

Author of «Data Feminism» / Associate Professor of Urban Science & Planning / Director, Data + Feminism Lab Department of Urban Studies & Planning

All of you noticed the democratic decline and the corresponding rise in autocratic regimes in recent years. To better understand and address this issue, my colleagues and I started last fall to look into data on democracy.

Throughout this spring semester, the students from the second and fourth semester at Data Design + Art developed data sculptures and interactive installations to visualise a variety of aspects around democracy and put them up to debate.

Therefore, I'm really looking forward to this Thursday's Open Atelier, and I hope to see many familiar faces there.

Happy to share my newest writing «Missing Data as Political Force» with you.

While "missing data" is often considered a problem, as in the context of adequate representation, the current authoritarian wave shows that data can offer recognition and oppression. For example, ICE's brutal use of personal data to target individuals with migration backgrounds. Conversely, restricting access to data and services can be employed as political pressure.

To navigate this "paradox of exposure" (as coined by Catherine D'Ignazio and Lauren Klein) and missing data's relational nature (as argued by Alessandra Jungs de Almeida), I draw on theories of social and data justice, namely Bonnycastle’s continuum of social justice and Fraser’s abnormal justice, to show how missing data lies between social equality and oppression and can be analysed based on (mis)distribution, (mis)recognition, and (mis)representation.

RE: @tante@tldr.nettime.org

Oh s***, maybe this is oversimplificating things, but there should be some kind of "are you a human" captcha to be able to push code to open source projects. Or changes made by agents should at least be checked before merged.
