I'm logging 3 different types of conversation people using AI try to have with me.

  1. "I am so high right now"
  2. "Please acknowledge that I am just as smart while huffing paint as I am while sober"
  3. "I know gambling is not the best but yesterday I thought I'd hit the slots, and first it was seven-seven-apple, then banana-cherries-apple, and then seven-banana-apple—and I know I shouldn't read into it but isn't that interesting??"

@coolsquid@438punk.house @emsenn@kolektiva.social i think math lacks the usual mechanisms for taking positions like i could state boldly that i believe truly that there exists a largest prime number n such that n+2 is also prime (or that i believe there are infinitely many) and 0 out of 100 mathematicians would respect me or think i have anything interesting to say—either i can prove it or i can't, right? so math people (especially the prolific ones) are basically people who question everything, sincerely and from a place of open curiosity (i.e. this is the opposite of "just asking questions" in case that isn't clear) and i think anarchists occupy basically the only political position that can tolerate people who never stop questioning everything that isn't absolutely settled

i'm not even planning or planting things, just pruning, trimming, pulling hours later, i can't even tell if it looks noticeably better (i'm not a garden noticer) but like, i know i made this space better for the things living in it idk i guess i expected it to be satisfying like crossing any other thing off on a to-do list, i wasn't prepared to be this happy after

i have no frame of reference

maybe it's a me thing, maybe it's a #adhd thing, maybe it's just a basic human thing but

#gardening is so satisfying, rewarding, and addictive

i had no idea, nobody warned me

it takes a good online community to start with the premise

"gimp should be called something else"

and it takes a truly wonderful online community to conclude

"gimp should be renamed 'photoshop for sluts'"

@FknHannu @Kalshann YES this, also towing the specific line of "slacking on schoolwork while also learning a lot via totally unconventional avenues is a valid movie hero path" i think meant a lot to my adhd self

@mhoye I've lived in Toronto, and it's a great city to wander around on foot (but so are Chicago and New York and to a lesser extent Boston). I've also driven a car in a few big cities, and it's always bad—Boston is terrifying, New York scary and frustrating, Chicago unnerving, but Toronto is far and away the absolute worst driving experience I have ever had. So I guess I can at least understand that a large portion of the voting public is both frustrated at driving while also not worldly enough to understand that Toronto's streets are singularly badly designed for cars, so sure yeah maybe the problem is bike lanes

@dalias@hachyderm.io @paulasadoorian@infosec.exchange yeah if you'd asked me on day 1 of the reveal when people were already saying "swastika made of dicks" I'd have predicted the new logo would last a few weeks, a few months tops. How wrong I was!

@coreyspowell wait there are moons inside the rings of saturn?? how are they not torn apart by tidal forces when something else clearly was torn apart by tidal forces exactly that distance from the planet? are saturn’s rings simply a moon that failed to “get good”? edit: oops, never mind, my bad, didn’t realize those were rings labels, not moons

@gnomon@mastodon.social @phire@phire.place I've been using XReal glasses as my main screen for about a year, and I can confirm that the biggest downside is having to say "don't worry, there's no camera or anything creepy" every damn time a new human sees me

@jzb Oh definitely not pro-worker—mostly just the “media creates moral panic when people who normally have little power do something pretty easy to completely upset an already-fragile but load-bearing system of values” angle. Like, you’re obviously right about workers, because it’s exactly what already happened by default until (I presume) somebody whisper-yelled “ixnay on the plagiarism-ay” and the focus became EDUCATION needs to EVOLVE because AI is INEVITABLE

The media would be running horror stories about the terrible trend of workers getting the same pay for working less, and the awful quality of LLM output. Maybe they’d still call them “hallucinations,” but it’d be in the terrified tone of 80s anti-drug PSAs. I feel like we actually did briefly see this early on when basically the first actual real-world use-case was students automating bullshit papers. (Certainly, they reached for plagiarism, the correct word, but leveled at the students and not at all at the service provider.) @jzb

@TomF@mastodon.gamedev.place @netspooky@haunted.computer Yes, this. This is the detail that graduates it from just regular evil/sketchy/pathetic to actually bewildering. Like, did some regional manager "design" the sticker by dictating "Hey Siri, Tell OpenAI To Design A Sticker That Says No USB Only Wi-Fi"? Or is there some regulation about covering ports with stickers that requires the sticker to have a pull-tab icon?
