I like walking around cities and looking at the buildings. My favourites are classical and vernacular architectures, and I also enjoy little ornaments and details on humble constructions testifying to the love and care someone put in them.
After joining Mastodon in an effort to leave big tech, I realized this could be an opportunity to look through my photos, share them, and even research some of the depicted buildings.

Playground-area in the IC #train traveling between #Zurich and #Chur #Switzerland. It's great that #SBB offers this on some #trains: long trips are more fun for children and the rest of the train is more quiet for adults.
Sometimes these areas are so full of kids climbing, running and jumping that it is almost magical to see how rarely they accidentally hurt each other.
There are two layouts: this is the jungle-themed one, other trains have a castle/dragon slide with a house instead of the boat.

Replying to @streetartutopia@mastodon.online
@streetartutopia After looking at the picture for 5 minutes I became convinced it is AI generated (knee disappearing in mosaic on the left etc). But after a quick research, turns out it is real: https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2022/feb/22/lavish-roman-mosaic-is-biggest-found-in-london-for-50-years Difficult times to know what to believe.

Historic building in the center of #Merano, 1913. The balconies, bay windows and turrets create movement on the #facade, making the large volume appear less massive.
The building interacts with the surrounding city: On the large street there are large shop windows and balconies. On the left, a narrow, medieval street with arched #porticos begins. Our building only suggests the first arches, thus widening the space at the intersection. Then, it marks the first arch with a turret. #architecture

The historical Plankenstein building was planned by Pietro Delugan and built in 1907 in #Merano. It looks quite pompous, but is nevertheless well inserted into the city structure. I also like how it features a #portico on the ground floor, protecting people from rain and heat. #Sudtirol #architecture #facade

A beautiful #belleepoque building in #Merano, Italy. I particularely like the building crown, where the roof is interrupted by a recessed volume with rich ornamentation. #architecture #ornaments #facade #Sudtirol

The Gletscherschliffe in #Merano is a large, sloped rock with a very smooth surface. During the ice-age, a glacier moved over this rock and sanded it down. Today it is located next to the #Tappeinerweg (a panoramic walk over the city), and kids love to climb up the slope. #FootpathFriday #Sudtirol

In my last posts, I showed two beautiful #belleepoque buildings in #Merano, Italy, which was a tourism destination for wealthy people from Germany and Austria.
So what would they do there? For example, take a walk on the #Tappeinerweg, an easy footpath with views over the city. It was created/sponsored by doctor Franz Tappeiner, who reccomended light exercise and the "good", local air as a cure against tuberculosis. Not sure about this cure, but the walk is very nice to this day. #SilentSunday

The villa Posch in #Merano, Italy, built in 1913. Merano has Thermal baths and a relatively warm climate, and it was located at the southern end of the Habsburg Empire at the time. Therefore, it used to be an important travel destination for nobles and wealthy people during the #belleepoque. Most beautiful buildings from this time are still preserved today. #architecture #facade

Picture of an #abandoned Hotel on the #Rigi mountain in Switzerland. In 1871 this mountain became the first in Europe to be reachable by a mountain train. The rail connection brought lots of tourists, and several hotels and restaurants were built. Most of them are now demolished, and the pictured one is no longer in use. #architecture #SilentSunday

A multifunctional building in #Zurich, overall looking like a boring box. However, some of the precast #concrete #facade panels are shaped like #caryatids! In theory a great idea: using precasting, one could create sculptural, durable and cheap ornamental elements, exactly what I would love to see!
But why like this? Why are there no heads? Why aren't the caryatids carrying anything? Why is there no roof to protect them from rainwater? A missed opportunity. 2000 #architecture #facade

House in #Ierissos, Greece, with #architecture elements from the traditional, #vernacular style of #Macedonia:
A protruding volume supported by inclined timber beams; two levels, with stone walls in the lower part and lighter materials above; wood shutters; windows decorated with wooden frame.
Many such buildings can be seen in the old town of #Arnaia.
However, Ierissos is a newer village, and the depicted house is recent, imitating the traditional style. #WindowFriday #FensterFreitag

Im my last post I showed a church with a #painting depicting the building itself from outside. This is another example, the Saint Matthias church in #Steinhausen, Switzerland. In this case, the town has grown a lot since the painting was created, so it is no longer possible to take a picture from the same viewpoint. Notice how in the fresco there are two little angels sending flowers down to the church.
