I am not sure what is your point with iPhones - a product of luxury. Semiconductor industry is not a good example of consumer-driven sector, it being supported by military funding throughout history - transistor, IC, microprocessor, and key industries like research centers, foundries supported or straight out owned by governments (Taiwan, UAE, newly US 😃)

John Mauriello, a product designer made a nice video essay about why he is tired of self-serving products and why they do not have value to society in mind. Funny and witty. Appears to be looking for collaboration. (appreciate the sources throughout the video)
