To round off the series, here’s an animal we searched for for a long time before finally spotting it in 2024: the ever-so-cute but endangered numbat, of which there are said to be just 800 adults left.

Although easy to spot on Rottnest Island, the quokka remains very rare on the Australian mainland and is classified as vulnerable.

For me, the puffin is a symbol of the decline in biodiversity. As a child, I saw them covered in oil on the beaches of Brittany, and now I see their colonies dwindling due to overfishing. Not to mention the puffins found dead on French beaches this winter.

There are now only 6,500 cheetahs left in Africa, whereas they were found across the entire continent at the start of the 20th century. They are classified vulnerable.

The wetland-dependent northern lapwing (Vanellus vanellus) is in sharp decline and is classified as vulnerable in Europe. The disappearance of many wetlands to make way for intensive farming is the main threat. Furthermore, in France, it is still hunted. I hate hunting.

There are thought to be just 6,500 adult sea lions left in Australia, with four main colonies, including Kangaroo Island, where I shot this photo.

I was surprised to see that black-legged kittiwakes (Rissa tridactyla) are also classified as vulnerable. The cliffs are less and less noisy. Overfishing, as well as climate change and pollution, are the main threats.

@garibaldi2@piaille.fr Concernant les nuances apportées par Madame Woessner, elle souligne bien que la piste des engrais n'est pas la seule piste. Nous n'avons d'ailleurs pas compris pourquoi cette piste était celle qui était mise en avant par l'ANSES, qui formule aussi un avis discutable sur l'agriculture bio. J'ai trouvé amusant la piste russe mais je ne la suis pas quand elle donne la parole aux producteurs marocains pour dire qu'il n'y a pas de pb. Il y aurait beaucoup à dire, pas assez de temps.

@garibaldi2@piaille.fr Le cadmium est un problème de santé publique, vous avez raison, , et j'aurais aimé que les médias s'en inquiètent beaucoup plus tôt, en particulier quand il s'agissait de contamination des populations dans les anciennes régions minières. Là il y a des publications montrant le risques de cancer liés à l'exposition au cadmium. @garibaldi2@piaille.fr Si vous lisez attentivement la dernière étude sur l'Alimentation Totale (EAT) vous verrez qu'il est indiqué que si les céréales du petit déjeuner sont à forte teneur en cadmium c'est sûrement du aux céréales contenant du chocolat, que si vous mangez une douzaine d'huitres vous avalez deux fois la dose tolerable en cadmium préconisée par l'EFSA. Alors oui à la diminution du cadmium dans les engrais pour protéger les sols mais cela ne diminuera pas la contamination de votre assiette.

@garibaldi2@piaille.fr si vous faites le lien direct entre le niveau de contamination de votre assiette et le niveau de contamination des sols en France, c'est que vous considérez implicitement que le contenu de votre assiette ne contient que des aliments produits sur les sols de France. Or les études EAT 2 et EAT 3 analysent les produits que nous consommons, quelle que soit leur origine. Pour moi il y a réel biais. Il ne faut pas confondre corrélation et causalité.

@garibaldi2@piaille.fr Limiter la teneur en cadmium dans les engrais est salutaire pour limiter la contamination des sols mais le lien entre cette teneur dans les sols et la teneur dans les grains de blé est complexe. Cela tient compte de la biodisponibilité et des facturs physiologiques qui expliquent la répartition du cadmium dans les plantes. Les canadiens ont réglé ce problème en cultivant des variétés faiblement accumulatrice. Pourquoi ne pas le faire en France?

@acrimed Il serait bien d'écouter les scientifiques qui ont travaillé depuis des années sur le cadmium plutôt que de faire des raccourcis. Le cadmium est un danger, mais croire que l'on règlera le problème en limitant sa teneur dans les engrais est une erreur grave. Et croire que le blé que l'on mange sur le territoire français provient uniquement des sols de France en est une autre.
