Just listened to one of the luminaries of software development say (paraphrased): „I sort of like pair programming but have been developing on my own for 20 years. Now I enjoy to pair up with Claude for programming. It’s making mistakes, but it’s _well-intended_ mistakes and we discuss them.“ When you’re at that stage of anthropomorphizing an automaton it will be hard to sympathise with the feelings and fallacies of real humans. You got rid of human friction and will probably never go back.

@ewolff @oli @rotnroll666 Die Geschichte von den Lobbyisten, die an allem Schuld sind, ist sowohl Selbstentschuldung als auch Selbstentmächtigung. Die Bevölkerung könnte andere Parteien wählen und die SW Community könnte sich entscheiden, Technologien zum Nutzen der Menschen einzusetzen. Beide tun es nicht in der großen Masse, weil *Einzelne* entscheiden, dass ihnen die persönliche Bequemlichkeit/Verdrängung wichtiger ist.

@Avner @vaurora Even if they worked perfectly all the time the ethics case would still be clear. Claude code might be optimised for coding but it comes with all the ethical baggage of the other LLMs.

@joelle A friend recently pointed to a different thing that may be worth the trillions: Having complete control over the information for the masses and thereby their opinions and beliefs. Putting all people out of work is incompatible with capitalism, controlling their beliefs is very compatible with capitalism and consumption.

@sundogplanets Reading through many articles about energy usage of GenAI suggests that looking at individual queries does not give a good picture. Mostly because the additional effort for training and alignment of models is hard to measure and AI data centers have very different energy usage characteristics than locally deployed models. The best we can do is looking at the overall energy usage of AI data centers and what they plan/estimate for the future. And this is horrible.

@radiologe@chaos.social Es gibt einen Unterschied zwischen einer Blackbox, die deterministisch immer das gleiche tut, und einer die indeterministisch mal so und mal so antwortet. Erstere kann ich mit Statistik in den Griff bekommen, d.h. die Fehlerrate bestimmen und durch andere deterministische Methoden auf ein akzeptables Level bringen. Nichtdeterministische Verfahren sind ein Black Swan; die Vergangenheit ist kein sicheres Indiz für die Zukunft. Daraus ergibt sich eine ganz andere Risikokategorie.

Was aber bei der Bewertung der Endlagerproblematik meist nicht erwähnt wird: Wir haben das gleiche Problem bei der Lagerung hochgiftiger Chemikalien in (z.B.) Elektroschrott. Die fallen in viel größeren Mengen an UND ZERFALLEN NIE, d.h. sie bleiben für immer hochgiftig. Der Unterschied: bei radioaktiven Abfällen schauen wir hin.

I‘m thinking about organising a conference „The Last Coder“ - in reference to the novel trilogy „The Last Policeman“. It would, of course, focus on coding without GenAI; would take place sometime between April and June ‘27 in my favourite conference location, which is about 50 km from Frankfurt. Max 60 people - or what the location can currently accommodate.

And then they talk about how they have been using and are going to be using this exact technology „reasonably“. Their values are so separated from their actions that they don’t even realise what just happened.

I seem to remember that the introduction of price comparisons among gas stations in Germany resulted in higher prices. Assumed reason: the chains were not allowed to exchange price information; now they could just look it up and raise their rates if nearby stations had higher ones.
