NEW: Over the last few months, Meta has run dozens of paid ads that included AI-generated CSAM.

The ads, some of which were linking out to “nudify” apps, targeted men in the US, UK, and a dozen European countries. Some were running in the last few days

NEW: A glimpse at how AI image generators are used. Researchers set up a fake image editor on Hugging Face and within a week received 1,000 prompts. 73% of them were sexual and 83% of those were asking for people (women) to be “undressed”. Around 6% of the sexual requests also targeted minors https://www.wired.com/story/hugging-face-has-a-nonconsensual-deepfakes-problem/

NEW: San Francisco's city attorney has sent cease and desist letters to Apple and Google, telling them to stop hosting and profiting off apps that can 'nudify' people.

"These companies have responsibility to ensure that apps on their platforms do not facilitate sexual abuse," David Chiu told me

This follows researchers repeatedly finding apps, commonly face swapping apps, that can nudify people in the App Store and Google Play Store. Researchers say the companies are well aware of the problems and are not doing enough about the harmful apps

NEW: For more than a decade, police in South West England have been quietly experimenting with algorithms to score thousands of people. Most of them didn't know anything about it.

Staff didn't trust some systems, reports obtained by WIRED show, with experts saying some systems designed to protect children could have led to "historic harms"

Really does continue the UK's push to roll out more and more face recognition systems—both those operated by the police and also in privately owned shops

NEW from me: Grok has continued to host sexualized and demeaning images of celebrities, a review of public posts from Grok Imagine has found.

As well as this, people have been creating full nudity (against Grok’s terms) and sex scenes with the Musk-owned AI

X and xAI removed the dozens of posts we flagged after we got in touch, but did not comment

Updated! We are now up to 20 entries in my European digital sovereignty tracker. New examples of orgs ditching US tech include media entities, the Dutch National Bank, and open source sewing software. Thanks to everyone who has sent me examples, please do keep them coming if there are others I am missing! There's a handful that I am still reviewing and I'm also considering in the next update including new categories (political declarations, funding, projects such as Euro-Office, etc) https://drive.proton.me/urls/EG60KWHEDG#7P2AL5m6PPzT #digitalsovereignty #europe #tech #opensource

NEW:

Thousands of men are members of Telegram groups and channels that advertise and sell hacking and surveillance services that can be used to harass friends, wives and girlfriends, and former partners, new research has uncovered.

The findings, from a European nonprofit group, also say that the communities are involved in extensive trading, selling, and promotion of a huge variety of abusive content, including nonconsensual intimate images of women, so-called nudifying services, plus folders of images that sellers claim include child sexual abuse material and depictions of incest and rape.

NEW: Food prices in Europe have been soaring. Earlier this year, the Austrian government said it would build a price database to let people compare costs at different supermarkets. It said this would take months to make and only include a small number of product categories.

Within 2 hours, @badlogic@mastodon.gamedev.place had built a first prototype, pulling the data from supermarket's websites, and open sourced the project. Now Heisse Preise lists 177,000 products from 10 chains.

The transparency has allowed prices to be compared: and the results appear to show supermarkets are watching each other and adjusting their prices based on others. The competition authority is investigating and already said new laws should make supermarkets publish proper APIs with full item data
