Salt Lake City had plenty of big names visit then, and there were several classic rock stations on the radio too. ...now away from the Wasatch front it could well have been a different story. A few years later SLC had an excellent new wave radio station too, but that is 80s territory.

On the few occasions I've wanted a GUI on a remote servers I've installed some flavor of VNC (probably tightvnc, but you have choices) and tunneled that over ssh. It's been adequate for casual stuff, at least.
