It's been tricky to put together a collection that filters out the grossest stuff without just filtering every other post because the word "food" or "ate" is used colloquially. The worst are the folks who just post pictures of the most disgusting bowl of slime you've ever seen with no words or alt text at all. I've had to unfollow folks because of a pattern of doing that repeatedly despite a lot of their other interesting posts. 😩

Oh well. 😩

@SwiftOnSecurity@infosec.exchange I bought a PocketPC off of ebay once that came with a CF card with some really vanilla 2000s MPEG porn movies on it. It didn't really seem to have much else? Someone had enough of a porn addiction that they carried around a tiny computer for it before it was cool, but not enough of a porn addiction to be into anything more than a surfer dude and a blond chick doing it missionary. The world is full of mysteries.

Battery sockets arrived today so i buttoned up Pokemon and Final Fantasy Legend. While I'm in a posting mood, here's some photos of the finished results. Nothing to write home about and a couple "how did you even mess it up that bad?!"s but I overloaded Zelda and added more components than I needed to start... just needed the resistor, and the diodes/whatnot that Mario 2 needed just broke it. 😩 EDIT: To be clear, the FRAMs are leftover 18W08s from modding my Saturn. 😌

Tonight I sat down and did Zelda: Link's Awakening, as well. I broke a leg on the last spare FRAM I had, so no Tamagotchi, and Final Fantasy Legend seems to have the SRAM built into the mapper. I bought a new battery for Pokemon Blue, since I hear the FRAM makes it incompatible with Pokemon Stadium. I also broke out the continuity tester and fixed Harvest Moon 2 GBC, so now everything's working! 😌

One persistent issue I have with #maug is that most advice for optimizing seems to assume your CPU has things like a branch predictor and the ones I care about... don't. Or that you should use types like size_t for security and... I'd rather keep integers 16-bit if I don't *really* need them larger.

I've waffled back and forth on this as I've learned and I really need to sit down with some static analysis tools and repair some of the damage this has caused...

@theirongiant@hachyderm.io It's a debian-specific quirk... different distros package the includes/libraries for compiling against a lib (as opposed to just using software that was compiled against that lib already) in different ways, but I just happen to be familiar with the Debian way. 😌

For a change of pace, I tried replacing the battery RAM chip in my Harvest Moon GBC 2 Cartridge with a FRAM chip leftover from the Saturn job... It didn't work, so I guess I gotta do continuity testing, and I don't feel like it.

I never got far in that game because you had to play as a boy to marry girls or... anyone and keep playing... but it has sentimental value because it was my first Amazon order.

I had hoped to do something cool with sound with #maug this weekend, but I ended up playing tug of war with myself over the viewport again...

I got it working by scrapping/redoing it, but oh man... it's still glitchy and... tbh, it makes me feel like a human ChatGPT? Like I have a tiny context window? My first engine, ProCIRCd, like, 15 years ago? Collapsed under the weight of it. I guess the fact that maug hasn't collapsed is a good sign?

I wish other engines ran on cool platforms...

Holy smokes. I never knew any of this, but apparently that's why, after they went to PSX, Final Fantasy VII and VIII sucked, IX was really good, and then they never really had another good thing come out of the franchise until the character of the pink-haired knight, Claire "Lightning" Farron, who ended her sentences with "da na" (but maybe not so much the games she was in, just the character). XI was... mixed... but I'm not sure that applies here.

@mrotteveel @aral 10 years is not that old... unless you're on a Mac, I guess. SimFarm and SimAnt are two masterpieces that are several times that. Of course, in Steam's case, this rot is really more evident on the Mac where they dropped 32-bit support and emulation so a lot of recent stuff is just not usable, and I think that's a major danger if update-brain is pervasive. In an ideal world, folks would restrain themselves from adding features and just fix bugs until their code is perfect.

@aral Bugs and exploits give a sjngle-player game charm, and a sequel is a different game, not a replacement. Riven wasn't a replacement for Myst! You could argue that games can be ported to new platforms, but I'm wary of any thinking that lets old platforms get away with shifting out from under the feet of an already ported game. Someday the author will die, and not every game is FOSS! A platform that relies on a living author is a lousy platform! Anyway this is a big niche but important! IMO

@aral I think this applies to tools, but I also think one of those "narrowly-scoped" fields is games, as far as "done code" goes... Sometimes software is done: it's all it needs to be, and that's OK. Games don't need to evolve forever. They're often an artistic vision that just needs to continue to be supported by the OS. Saying code needs to evolve forever is throwing the baby out with the bathwater and leads to Apple not being able to run PPC games and having even Steam be basically broken.

@somebody I think 2FA is a great thing and I was doing it on my own stuff before it was everywhere, but I can totally relate to this comic. I think it's having to go through this dance with a system that's half-baked to login to something I hate. Oh, you don't support my Yubikey? You need an app that needs Google spyware installed? Or you can send a text message? OK I took my phone off the wireless cradle and signed into *that* and... yay now I'm in friggin Teams. Whoopee.

@c64whiz 86box or PCem aren't technically VMs, but you don't need much oomph to emulate a 386sx and they give you a lot more flexibility with hardware (letting you pick a video card and sound card to emulate, for example), which is kinda vital for projects like this.

Just stay offline and putter around in Visual Basic or the Flight Simulator scenery editor. Maybe one of the new SNES emulators that can kinda play commercial games, or ZZT if you were feeling old-school. Good times.

There's some gnarly pointer/int math going on so who knows how it'll fare in 64-bit land? 😌

It's something that's happening and is at least mildly concerning...

@lispi314 @simontatham The issue is solely with PuTTY, but any key that's been used with PuTTY can be assumed compromised (even if generated elsewhere) due to the PuTTY handling it making the private key retrievable based on the encrypted traffic.
